I have Fedora Core 4 (Linux) on a mini and it runs the fan at full-blast, 24x7. |

Well, that Linux distro probably doesn't have the necessary drivers or what-not to integrate with the temperature probe to use the various speed setting for the fan; it just sticks it on high all the time. _________________ Computer Engineer

Maybe it works by % of CPU usage vs. time |

Either way, it's kinda odd (at least to me) that it would change from one update to another. Weird. |

It doesn't matter how it works, it matter where the software is that controls this feature. If the software is in OpenFirmware, it should work anyways, but if the software is in OS X, then it makes sense that the fan isn't being managed like it should be because Fedora doesn't know how to do that. _________________ Computer Engineer

Whatever it is, Yellow Dog Linux does the fan properly on the mini (ramps up when needed), so the Fedora folks should be able to figure it out, unless they wanted the fan on full-blast for a reason. (shrug) |

The only temperature probe the macmini has, is located on the hard disk.
I will try to look for the program that continuously measures this temperature.
Mine is about 48 degrees C, when fan starts to hit, it goes to about 44 degrees. |

Okay, I just upgraded to 10.4.2 and it doesn't seem to be making the fan run hardcore. I was just playing Diablo 2, and since I only have 256Mb of RAM, my Mini gets hot pretty quickly. I've stopped playing and my Mac seems to have its fan on, though I don't think it's on high. It's always noisey here with the TV on because someone's watching it, but I don't think 10.4.2 has changed how much my fan is running on my Mini. I'll update later once I've left my Mini doing nothing for a long time. _________________ Computer Engineer

I always thought it was the overclock to 1.5 that was making the fan run more than normal. But ever since the update to 10.4.2 I have had no issues with the fan.... _________________ 1st Generation Mac Mini 1.5/512/40gig/Superdrive/Tiger |

So your Mini's fan actually runs less often now that you installed 10.4.2? _________________ Computer Engineer

I didn't see any options for making it display temperatures in Celsius. That really is the standard for measuring system temperatures. I know that a computer is starting to get hot around 50-60 degrees. Once you start to get above that there's normally a cooling problem.
I just converted your 89.2F to 31.2C, and that's really frickin' cool. I shouldn't think that you'd need the fan going so high to keep it that low. 40C is plenty fine for a computer to run at. _________________ Computer Engineer

The app was initially displaying in °C. I had to change the preferences to display in °F. _________________ -=iMav=-
