OWC Intros NASPerform Network Attached Storage Solution
Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Posted by: Glenn
Other World Computing today announced its NASPerform Network Attached Storage Solution for home or business networks. With a data storage capacity of up to 750GB, NASPerform connects to wired or wireless networks for file storage and sharing among multiple network users. Available for Mac and Windows, NASPerform stores and shares photos, music, movies, and other data with up to 20 other network users. It works just like an internal hard drive. Users just simply point and click, and drag and drop files they wish to access. With its built-in USB 2.0 port, NASPerform can also be used as a portable external hard drive for personal file storage. NASPerform is available in five pre-configured 7200RPM solutions, from 250GB to 750GB, priced starting at $127.99. A 0GB "add your own drive" enclosure is also available for $59.99.

Ugly product but great price. Plus it's from OWC another bonus. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

| I would rather have the LaCie Ethernet Disk mini in the same price range, which by the way has Gigabit Ethernet. I will give OWC credit for offering a barebones enclosure, albeit in black. |

Color does not matter for a network drive, put it next to your wireless router, that's not in sight either. _________________ ___________________Jim©

And the Lacie has ability to plug in another USB external HDD for extra storage, quite the plus . _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

I really wasn't aware of NDAS or its differences with NAS. Learning something new all the time. |

Even if my router is beige?
Just kidding. Colors don't really matter that much to me. I just happen to be on a little silver kick since getting my Mac mini. |

But as I understand it, the LaCie runs embedded Linux and is only formattable as FAT or EXT, no HFS+ option. I would assume that the NASPerform has specific support for HFS+, but the page doesn't say. _________________ My hardware:

Yep, just got confirmation from the manufacturer (in under an hour!):
| Quote: | Hello Rob,
Yes, you can format it HFS+ if you are on an all Mac network. MSDOS format is to be used if you have a Mac and PC network.
Thanks for your interest in our products.

I could live with EXT3, but you bring up a good point. I looked at the manual for the NASPerform and on page 22 it states that HFS+ is supported.
Edit: One sip of coffee and you beat me to it! |

| I'm fixated on buying a Gigibit router with a USB storage link, but this looks like a cool product at a decent price. |

I would love to have a gigabit switch if I ever get that MacBook iMac combo (iMac sill probably not be until college since my parents got my brother and sister a Gateway (there was a store locally and never had problems with them) but I want to try for a Mac of some sort) and MacBook I decided to wait till OS X 10.5 Leopard (been eyeing Macs ever since Mac mini came out I think I can wait a few months). I have one question though can the Lacie support FAT32? _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."
