Apple Releases iPod Reset Utility 1.0.2
Friday, July 6, 2007
Posted by: Brian
Apple has released iPod Reset Utility 1.0.2. According to the company, version 1.0.2 will restore 1st and 2nd Generation iPod shuffles back to their factory settings when iTunes is unable to do so. The process completely erases all music and data and reinstalls the iPod software version listed below:
- iPod shuffle (1st Generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5
- iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.3
The iPod Reset Utility 1.0.2 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

I was just about to call Apple when I read about this reset software --
The new software, iTunes 7.3, must be mucking up the shuffles -- my iTunes keeps giving me an "unknown error" message which says that it cannot save my library. All downloads vanish into the ether.
So am I to understand that resetting the shuffle will solve the problem? Or what's behind this new download?
Thanks,
DMS |

It's a shame they didn't offer a new black shuffle along with the update. |

Mine seems to be working fine with iTunes 7.3, but you may need to revert back to 7.2 for it to sync properly again. That being said, I would at least try the new reset utility before doing so. What do you have to lose? _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Well obviously you didn't see this "secret" shuffle released in China .

Shuffle is working fine, plays through radio and earphones. But even though I just downloaded 7.3 again, iTunes still says that it has an unknown error and cannot save the library. Shuffle is not even connected, so the problem is with iTunes. I sure hate to dump my entire library and start over.
Can't revert -- didn't save 7.2, darn it. |

This sounds great but you do relize you can do this for free.
Using disk utility and apple's own restore utility...
Let me explain.
Have you ever had a ipod connect and show up in disk utility.... But not on your desktop.... Not in itunes.
All you have to do is go into disk utility.
Format the ipod it should show up in disk utility as a drive.
Then run the apple ipod restore in itunes. It will format the ipod again and install the latest firmware and your ipod will be as good as new .
Funny considering they want you to purchase a piece of software to do this when you could do it yourself for nothing.
You wouldn't imagine how many ipods i have refurbished using this technique a nice way to make extra cash let me tell you. |

Mystery solved:
Meanwhile, Apple also released iTunes 7.3.1, which "addresses a minor problem with iTunes 7.3 accessing the iTunes Library." |

Good deal! It's a shame Apple didn't get it right the first time around, but at least you didn't have to wait that long. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)
