Do you need a plan in order to use the iPhone?

I couldn't find an answer anywhere. If I don't get the at&t plan right away, can I still use the other features in the iPhone before I get my actual plan? (For instance, the iPod?)

I was listening to TWIT and I beleive it was mentioned that without activation the only thing that can be done as an emergency 911 call.

TUAW detailed a way to get it working without an actual plan, but in order to use it to its fullest and not have to go through all kinds of hassle, it is best just to get an iPhone as a phone first.

I'm sure it would be boring without a plan, since you wont get all the features the iPhone gives. I just don't want to leave my current Verizon plan and get fined for it.

I heard from a few people that actually Verizon was supposed to get the iPhone, but they turned it down since they wanted more control over it that Apple would allow also their music store was threatened by iTunes, Apple supposedly went to them for their better data network though. The way the two companies act that seems believable.

no you do not have to activate it with at&t just use the activation hack that has been floating around and you can use the ipod functions and the wiress functions without activating you iphone
