The Perian team has released Perian 1.0, a free QuickTime component that adds native support for many popular video formats. With Perian installed, any OS X application that uses QuickTime can now use these additional media types: AVI, FLV, MKV, MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivX, H.264, FLV1, FSV1, VP6, H263I, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), MPEG Layer II Audio and more. This can be a big help with playing videos in Front Row, for example.

New features and improvements include:

- Added support for Matroska/mkv
- Integrated a52codec
- Added subtitle support
- Added support for .gvi (avi wrapper from Google Video)
- Changed distribution to a Preference Pane in order to make installation simpler and configuration possible in the long term.
- Changed installation directory from /Library/QuickTime to ~/Library/QuickTime.
- Fixed avi/flv over http
- Added support for Windows Media Audio in AVI
- Added support for MPEG-1 layer 2 audio
- Added support for the ADPCM audio codec in FLV
- Added Vorbis decoder
- Added support for Fraps FPS1
- Added support for VP3
- Added support for i263
- Added support for HuffYUV
- Added support for MPEG-1/2 video in AVI/MKV
- Fix opening AVIs with VBR audio for which there is no available decoder
- Fix crash with DVI ADPCM
- Fix multichannel audio descriptions in AVI
- Faster opening of AVI files
- High profile H.264 support
- Full MPEG-4 video support in .mp4
- Altivec & SSE2 colorspace conversion
- Fix DV in type 1 AVIs

Perian 1.0 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher. The download weighs in at 2.2MB.

Finally, I can now import AVIs off of my video camera into iMovie without converting them in VLC first :-p

Installation was very easy and A52Codec is installed for you. I had no problems playing back AVI with AC3 audio.

My god I'm gonna donate to these guys, this helps so much, I essentially don't need vlc for anime anymore and play everything in front row with the remote to control everything! Now it's perfect.

A very important feature is that with this version finally the 5.1 passtrough on the digital output is working!!!!

How is this any different than Flip4Mac for Quicktime?
Looks like it just supports more filetypes. Is that it?

Perian is fantastic, now I can play my MKV and the rest via Frontrow.

When playing a movie in Frontrow with multiple embedded languages, anybody know how to select between the different languages i.e. audio tracks ?

I sold my PowerMac G4 and am waiting to buy the upcoming (hopefully soon) iMac, so I cannot test this right now, but I had a eyeTV Hybrid, with which I record over the air HD broadcasts. These typically have Dolby Digital Sound. When I used to export these eyeTV recording to H.264, my sound got converted to 2-channel AAC. With Perian 1.0, is there a way I can preserve that 5.1 Dolby Digital and still have H.264 video.

Will I be able to play the 5.1 channel through optical output on the iMac to my surround receiver?
