Tuesday, June 19, 2007

Maintenance utilities like Cocktail, MainMenu and OnyX can definitely help to keep your Mac running like a dream. The developers of Cocktail have taken their application a step forward today with the release of Cocktail 3.8. This release is the biggest update to Cocktail in almost two years and adds over one hundred new features, fixes and improvements. Some of these new features include: major interface improvements; updated Cocktail Help; improved Activity Log; added possibility to join Cocktail eList; and added possibility to include Activity Log when providing feedback. Cocktail 3.8 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and is priced at $14.95.

| It's hard to beat the price of OnyX, but I'll try the new trial. |

Would you recommend Cocktail over OnyX? |

What has impressed you so far? I've had a couple of problems with OnyX in the past, so I might be open to something new. |

Tried mainmenu enjoyed it a lot.
Tried onyx ok needs work does offer some usefull tools but not much after that.
Tried mantenence nice app needs more tools.
I have tried diffrent versions of a lot of application's i would mostly refer to these application's as mac for dummy's application's. These apps i would recommend for a beginner but for a more advance user of osx they are quite uneccassery application's. |

I used to use Cocktail, then at some point it fell behind and Onyx appeared on the scene...
I also like MainMenu a lot. very slick interface. _________________ Mac mini core 2 duo 2.33/2 GB RAM/160 GB 5K160, Dell 20.1" wide-aspect

True. But if it simplifies the process and helps, more power to them. Some people will never be comfortable running commands from the Terminal. An app like Cocktail also adds some things beyond general maintenance. I would also like to mention Anacron. This little app will run your maintenance scripts if they didn't run when scheduled. It just sits in the background and does its job quietly.

A big selling point of Mac OS X is the GUI and some form of visual coherency. Little (and I might add often free like Onyx and MainMenu) utility applications simply maintain that coherency.
I use the terminal frequently, but only when I am coding/developing or tweaking my mac in some way for which there is no UI.
Using MainMenu (as an example) to accomplish command line tasks also takes slightly less effort. (Alright, not always but...) _________________ Mac mini core 2 duo 2.33/2 GB RAM/160 GB 5K160, Dell 20.1" wide-aspect
