Mac Mini Gets Driver's License
Thursday June 21, 2005
Team Banzai has installed three Mac minis into a VW Touareg, but this isn't your average Mac mini auto install. These Mac minis are navigating the VW Touareg autonomously over 200 miles of terrain!
"Team Banzai is one of only 40 teams from around the country to advance by invitation to the national semi-finals of the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.
Selected from a field of almost 200 teams that applied and competed through earlier regional elimination rounds, Team Banzai is proud to be participating in this exciting head-to-head competition in an attempt to win $2 million.
Dora, is the world's first fully autonomous vehicle driven by Mac OS X. The entire development and race management efforts at Team Banzai is being done using Apple Mac OS X technology." – Team Banzai

I hope they have not underestimated the Mini's ability to think for itself... this car could pull a "stealth" and start doing whatever it wants to, like take a leisurely stroll on the beach instead of doing what it's human counterparts tell it to do I just have one question... if no one drives it, then who pays for the gas? _________________ Me with Woz!

The Minis drive it! Logically it would follow that they'd pay for gas also, . _________________ Computer Engineer

I wonder if each mini has a separate task or if they're clustered? I'm sure they're keeping everything secret for the contest, but it would be cool to see some more technical information on the setup. Maybe they'll post it after the contest. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

| Nobody pays for the gas. The car is powered by a DVD containing a MS Longhorn development speech. The crap is then converted to methane. It should be able to run for about 2 years. |

Dr John Choi from Team Banzai was on YourMacLife Wednesday night. He talked about what each Mac mini is used for. The first Mac mini is called the "Navigator". It's responsible for determining the vehicles location. The second Mac mini is called the "Tactician". It takes the data from the "Navigator" and determines where to go. The third is Mac mini is called the "Driver". The Driver controls the steering, gas, and braking. All the software is written in Objective-C and Cocoa. The interview takes place approximately half way through the broadcast.
