Fastmac offers Blu-ray upgrade for Mac mini

Fastmac today announced the availability of its Blu-ray optical disk upgrade for the Mac mini. The new slimline drive supports reading, writing and re-writing to single (25GB) and dual layer (50GB) Blu-ray media at 1x speeds. It also works with DVD and CD media, able to write to DVD-R and DVD+R discs at 8x in single layer and 2x in dual/double layer mode; it can rewrite to DVD-R and DVD+R media at 4x speeds. Fastmac's drive also supports DVD-RAW reading and writing and up to 5x speeds and CD-R and CD-RW discs at 8x speeds.

The drive is also compatible with following Apple computers: iBook G4, iMac G5, iMac Intel, MacBook Pro (17-inch), PowerBook G3 Pismo, PowerBook G4 Titanium (667 Mhz or higher) and PowerBook G4 Aluminum.

It should be noted that Blu-ray burning requires 3rd-party software such as Roxio's Toast 8 Titanium, which enables Blu-ray disk support in the Mac OS Finder, and Blu-ray media. Native support for Blu-ray burning within iLife & iTunes is expected in the future via Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but cannot be guaranteed at this time. Fastmac's Blu-Ray optical drive upgrade is scheduled to ship within 10 days and is priced at $799.95.

it's too bad we're in the middle of the High-Def war where this stuff is way expensive. Blu-Ray is pretty awesome, glad to know there's an upgrade...hopefully blu-ray gains popularity and lowers in price.

It will be nice when Blu-Ray/HD DVD products become more affordable. Right now, they are pretty steep in price and are very rare.

For people wanting a Blu-Ray drive, this would be a nice upgrade for their mac mini. I have never seen a slim Blu-Ray drive yet until now!

Yeah, give or take the next 2 years (maybe a little more...) it'll become the new standard...far more affordable because everyone will get one.

But yes, amazing to see a slim slot-loading blu-ray drive!

The storage capacity is what really gets me about the Blu-Ray devices. You could possibly store your whole iTunes library on one disk!

In the future, it will be amazing to see how commen these drives will become. My mini might even want one in a couple years!

The problem here is that I have early adopter taste and a beer budget. Laughing

I really dig the Blu-ray player in my PS3 though. Movies look awesome with a capital A. It sure is going to be great when this technology gets less expensive.

This is a great advancement and will be a real help when storing high res pictures from my Canon SLR. A little too expensive but I am sure just like DVD-RW drives, you will be able to pick them up for under £100 sooner or later..

this would be really great, but imagine burning 50 gb of stuff at 1x, it would take like a week!!, but still cool, that there are finally slim hd drives, i cant wait untill they get faster

I didn't know they burned at only 1X. That seems pretty slow, but for storing 50GB of data, I would be just fine with it. Once they become more popular, the write speeds and performance will increase.
