Apple TV Roundup
Thursday, March 22, 2007
Posted by: Charles
Apple has posted its service and support section for the Apple TV. This includes the long-awaited manual in PDF format. We have also continued to update our Apple TV news section with the latest news and reviews coming in from around the Web. Brian is also taking some box opening and comparison pictures with the Mac mini for the photo gallery. They should be posted in there later today or tomorrow. I would also like to invite everyone to post a picture of their Apple TV setup in the photo gallery.

The Mac mini looks so much smaller in the first two pictures. _________________ 1.66GHz, 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz Mac minis

We can all appreciate the fact that Apple smushed the Mac mini into the tv so it fits on our entertainment shelves better. We all know the Mac mini is a little foreign looking in that environment

Then question is, will the next revision of Mac mini look like the TV? Though the new AirPort still has the form factor of the current Mac mini... |

I like the size (depth to be exact) of the Mac mini better. I would rather see them make it a little taller if anything. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I would also rather get a taller Mac mini (even twice the height) if it means a better GPU and a 3.5" hard disk. |

I like mac mini size.
and wouldn't the 3.5mm HD make it louder? |

They don't need the extra height for a GPU. A 3.5" drive would be another story though.

I'm sure there would be some extra noise, but Apple might be able to overcome some of it. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

The Intel mini is simply not an option until they upgrade the GPU, and a full size hard drive would be a nice addition. Actually, even without the hard disk, if the larger case meant they could improve the cooling and put a full power USB port on it... that would be nice...
Ironically the AppleTV has an nVidia GeForce go7300 GPU, which is the kind of GPU the Mini should have had. |

If the GeForce go7300 is so great, why did they choke it at 720p? I don't think the specs for it are anything that special either. They might be better off going with the Intel GMA X3000. |

It's definitely a more capable GPU than the appalling GMA950 they actually used in the Intel mini, and nVidia has been historically well supported in Apple computers.

* The GMA X3000 only supports OpenGL 1.5, the go7300 supports OpenGL 2.0.
* The GMA X3000 doesn't support dedicated video memory.
Given that graphics in OS X are based on OpenGL, and OS X is so memory hungry, I would MUCH rather see the go7300 than the X3000 in a future mini. |
