|
|
Hey everybody!
I am getting a Mac Mini 1.42GHz next week. I just noticed though that the Mini has no audio in jack. What's up with that?
I have a few questions about this:
1. Is there a microphone I can get that doesn't require an audio in jack to record with it?
2. If I have an iSight webcam can I use the built-in mic in that to record voices?
3. What program do you use on Mac OS X to record things, such as your voice, with a microphone?
Thanks! I appreciate any input on this matter! _________________ 12" iBook 1.33GHz G4 1.5GB RAM 40GB HD + iSight

1. Yes. Pretty much any USB microphone should work; USB support on a Mac is normally pretty good. I found a really nice one by Macmice here that offers Mac support and looks pretty.
2. Yes.

I just discovered a cool thing from Griffin Technology..iMic. Does anyone happen to have one of these? I'd like to know how they work and if their compatibility with Macs are good. Thanks! _________________ 12" iBook 1.33GHz G4 1.5GB RAM 40GB HD + iSight

I use GarageBand for putting tracks together or recording instruments. When I'm just doing a down and dirty voice over or vocal track, I use Amadeus II, which, in addition to having good recording abilities, can edit and export just about any sound format. You have to make sure that you export at 41,000 khz though, cause that's the only bitrate supported by GarageBand. You can find Amadeus at www.hairersoft.com _________________ The Seduction of the Extraordinary at the Expense of the Mundane..

I use an M-Audio MobilePre USB audio interface. It has dual XLR inputs and 1/4 " jacks as well. Very cool. The iMic is cool for simple stuff, doesn't have great low-end sound. _________________ The Seduction of the Extraordinary at the Expense of the Mundane..

I'm having trouble finding it on the website. Do you have a more specific link to the product itself on the site? Sorry to be annoying. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. _________________ 12" iBook 1.33GHz G4 1.5GB RAM 40GB HD + iSight

| Quote: | | 3. When they say two 1/4" jacks "balanced" and "unbalanced" what does that mean? |
Found this info out: A balanced input is one that has 3 conductors. These conductors are a positive, a negative and a ground. Low impedance (sometimes referred to as a Low-Z mic) is a prime example of this type of input. The most common form of this is a 3 pin XLR jack is what is used to connect this type of mic to a mixer input. Since mic inputs are susceptible to noise, the use of a noise canceling cable and mic capsule is a good way to eliminate it at the source. This type of push-pull design is very much like a humbucking pickup on a guitar. A non-balanced input is a 2 conductor 1/4 input for plugging in higher output sources such as: tape decks, CD players, guitars, etc. Usually these devices have a signal that has already been "pre-amplified" which makes them louder and able to mask or hide noise.
BTW Your link isn't working. Do you have a link to directly to M Audio's site? _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

Yes. The 1/8" is the small one; used for both headphones and analog speakers normally, though SPDIF digital output can use this connector also.

Yes. The 1/4" jack is the jack that is normally associated with connecting musical instruments to amplifiers and such. _________________ Computer Engineer
