Apple said today that it will delay the release of the Apple TV until mid-March. "Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected, and we now expect to begin shipments mid-March," said Apple spokeswoman Lynn Fox. Steve Jobs introduced the Apple TV during his Macworld Expo keynote last month in San Francisco. AppleTV is designed to connect to a digital television and wirelessly stream music, videos and photos stored on a computer running Apple's iTunes Music Store. The device has a 40-gigabyte hard drive and can store up to 50 hours of video.

I hope this does not mean that they are having technical issues with the design. I want to get one, but I plan to buy it from a local reseller instead of the local Apple store. That means, I'll probably be waiting until April, before I get my hands on one.

If they had some slight issues with a product like the Apple TV. I wonder how are things going with a more complicated device, like say the iPhone.

My shipping/delivery dates changed from february 28/march 3 to march 20/march 27.

I'm sorry to say this will also delay the CinnaMount TV, as I need a unit to design a mount. It gives me a bit more time to think about useful features though.

Sounds like they're using the extra time to get through some lingering software problems. Hardware-related problems would almost absolutely cause a longer delay.

Hey, if they need a couple more weeks to QA the software, good with me. This whole thing is about user experience. If it ain't there, Apple TV falls flat.

On the bright side, Mac minis are shipping in 24 hours.

I think the Mac mini is a more complete solution anyways. Better video, email, browsers, games, OS X and Front Row. This is what I want hooked up to my TV.

Since the "AppleTV + games" strings were discovered in iTunes 7.1, I'm guessing one of two things should happen.

Let's look at what's already in place:

1. The current "Front Row remote" can't support the same games as the iPods, since the remote doesn't have scroll capabilities.

2. Games that only require up/down/left/right + 1 button (since home is reserved to get back to the menu) brings us back to the days of Atari 2600 gaming. I can't see many games concepts being able to fit this control scheme.

2. It would be better if the games could be shared between iPods and Apple TV (same code, graphics, etc).

3. It seems to me like scrolling through long lists with the current remote, either on the Apple TV or Front Row, is not a good thing. A clickwheel, like the iPod, would work much better.

So, IMHO, the Apple TV will either ship with a new remote that has a clickwheel (like an iPod) or it will ship with the current remote and a new clickwheel remote will be sold separately (and be required for gaming). Front Row users could also purchase this new, better remote.
