Is there any freeware program that can defrag a Mac OS Drive?
If not what Pay Software would do it and how good is it? _________________

Leave the Mac on overnight; it's automatic.
From what I understand Unix comes with an automatic schedular built in that can schedule programs to run at certain times. Since Unix was originally a server environment, a bunch of maintenance programs are set up to run at 3am. One of these programs should be a defragger. So just leave your Mac on overnight every so often.
Oh, I think there's another schedule for a program on the 1st of the month. _________________ Computer Engineer

Well I have been but I have been converting my .vob files and importing them into iMovie overnight...LOL
Maybe that would stop the defrag from happening...
I'll leave it on without anything running tonight..see how it goes..

I believe that these maintenance programs also run when the computer is idle if they haven't been run in the last week or so.
If you want to do reading about pretty much all Mac maintanence, I found a link that is a good reference and includes other links.

It suggested quite a few at the bottom. A quote from their page:
| MacAttorney wrote: | | To defragment your hard drive, you have to either purchase a defragmentation utility, like Alsoft's Plus Optimizer, or Norton's SpeedDisk (which only is available as part of Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks), TechTool Pro (which has an integrated defragmenter), etc. My current favorite of this lot is Norton SpeedDisk, which pains me, because I have heard from a surprising number of users that Norton Utilities in general has caused a lot of problems for them. (Though none of these users has implicated SpeedDisk.) In addition, Symantec has announced that there will be no new versions of Norton Utilities for future versions of OS X beyond version 10.3. |

Yep, a little out of date, but the core Unix environment in OS X hasn't changed from Panther to Tiger. _________________ Computer Engineer

iDefrag. http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php
but really no need for it on unix..just reboot your computer every few days if you feel worried about it..heh heh..
Defragging was left behind with OS9--Now repeat that 5 times-- _________________

Unix keeps a drive less fragmented than Windows does, but it still "needs" to be defragmented every so often. Restarting the computer won't do this either. You need to run a Unix application that does this and this is normally done by the cron application early in the mornings. See my post above. _________________ Computer Engineer

Repeat after me:
I solemnly swear that I will not install any Norton product on my pristine Macintosh.
It doesn't matter if a few people out there haven't had problems - it's not worth the risk. I had Norton corrupt two hard drives back when I was running Jaguar. It absolutely sucks on the Mac. Don't do it. Please _________________ The Seduction of the Extraordinary at the Expense of the Mundane..

This article discusses the pros and cons of defragging a drive under Mac OS X. The whole thing is worth a read, but the defrag stuff is on page 3.
