What size hard drive do you have in your Mac mini?
I have a 100GB 7200 RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021AS in my 1.66GHz CD Mac mini. The drive is slightly louder than the stock 80GB 5400 RPM Seagate ST98823AS that came with my Mac mini, but definitely outperforms it. It also does well against booting from an external. Here are some Xbench scores. _________________ Brian

I bought a 160GB WD drive last week, but haven't had the chance to install it yet. I plan on doing it this weekend. It will be replacing the stock 80GB drive.

You may want to add a 40GB option to the poll, as the low end PPC minis came with that size. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

I have the stock 60GB. When I need the extra space, I will go with an external. I don't see me upgrading the internal drive.

Brian, while I believe the results of your xbench tests, I find it hard to believe that any 2.5" internal drive would outperform a 7200 rpm 3.5" firewire drive in real world performance. Ignoring the test results, would you say that the 7200 internal drive really feels faster than the external drive? _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Just the stock 80GB model for me. I also have a 160GB LaCie mini and a Vantec Firewire case hosting an older 120GB drive.

I still have the super slow 4200-RPM 80GB HDD that came with my G4. I'll probably opt for a 120GB or 160GB drive when it comes time for me to order a new Mac mini with Leopard.

What, you don't like my scores?
They are pretty much on par with one another. I think the recent review over at AMUG came to the same conclusion. The higher density 160GB drives are also doing well, but I haven't had the chance to test one. However, I saw a review on Tom's Hardware that showed the 160GB Seagate 5400.3 performing almost as well as my 7200.1. If I was in the market for a new drive today, the 160GB Seagate 5400.3 would be at the top of my list. _________________ Brian

Thanks for directing me back to those articles, Brian. I missed the bit about the change in speed when the drive fills up before. If most of these comparison articles are testing empty drives (I now suspect that's what they're doing), one misses this important aspect of the comparison. It also seems that relative performance can change as the drive gets more data on it, so it's hard to take these stats too seriously unless there is a marked difference between drives. In my case, I have a stock 4200 rpm 80 gb drive in my mini, and the 200 gb 7200 rpm Samsung in my miniStack is clearly more responsive.
The one internal drive that seems to come first on everybody's list is the Hitachi 7K100. The only issue I've seen with this one is noise, and I've seen it in several places. That alone would keep me from buying it if it's true, so I'll ask here and in a separate posting about people's experience with the noise level of that drive. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

I still have the stock 60GB in my 1.5Ghz Mini. I don't think I will ever get a larger internal for it, but am looking arround at a 400GB external right now. _________________ The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.
