Datamation Systems claims the new device is more secure than a slot lock cable because it secures the mini to furniture with a powerful adhesive base with 700 pounds of dynamic sheer strength and or screws. This would be a good idea for school and public libraries to have. I wonder how many schools, libraries have put off purchasing the mini because they were worried about them getting jacked? It's a little harder lugging an eMac out in your bag!

palm scanners will fail if you smoke. presumably nobody at your colo is allowed to smoke

if it's an IR one yes. smoking constricts blood vessels and changes blood flow, especially in the small veins in the extremities. the overall temperature of the hands and feet drops 6-10 F from smoking one cigarette. this also goofs up facial IR scanners and some retina scans.

some scanners may be less sensitive than others to this, but when they fudge in favor of error, you get chances of false positives.

But they don't list a price, which is a REAL bad sign. Institutional hardware that you have to get a quote for tends to be ludicrously expensive (military-contractor scale). Anyone seen a price for this yet?

Why would you buy one of those when there is a slot on the bad of the Mini that's designed for security? This slot is used on laptops and such and security devices such as this are designed for it and very cheap.

I don't know the exact details of the Targus device, but the devices that I was talking about that latch onto the Mini secure it around something; they are just like a bike lock, you run the cable/chain/cord/whatever around a stationary object and you can't move the Mini away from that object.

I still like the idea of the brackets better for computer labs. And as someone who, in a former life, used to have to DEAL with college computer labs (back in my fledgling I.T. days), I speak from experience.
