Hello all,

I have a 1.42 GHz G4 mini with 512MB RAM. I've been trying to use it as a simple HTPC, however, I've been noticing that I lose synch when watching movies from the hard drive. I know that this mac isn't a power house, but this should be enough to decode a simple movie. I'm running at 1024x768, and not watching HD content, just some mp4s.

I've been thinking I should upgrade the RAM to 1GB, but I'm not sure if that will help. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Are you sure it's not the movie itself that is damaged in some way - have you played these movies elsewhere that they didn't loose sound sync?

I'm all for the RAM upgrade, but I dont' think it will help out in this situation. Which programs have you tried viewing the movie with? I know VLC will give error messages if frames get dropped and things go out of sync because of a lack of processing power, ram or disk or whatever it needs to keep the movie moving, among other things, though they're usually pretty cryptic.

I'm pretty sure the movies are fine. I lose sync with movies I pull from my tivo and recompress with ffmpeg. I'll try again with some movies I ripped with handbrake and see how those do.

I do get some errors occasionally from VLC, but I'm not quite sure what they mean. I think I'd recognize something about syncing. Frame drops should help the movie stay synced anyways.

I'm not too sure about RAM helping either, but it will help the mac in general, which can drag real bad with even a few apps open. I'm just not crazy about spendign $100 on this mac when I should prolly sink $600 into a new mini.
