G-Technology intros G-MINI for Mac mini

G-Technology has announced the G-MINI, a new companion hard drive and hub for Mac mini computers. Designed to complement the look and feel of the Mac mini, G-MINI features FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 connectivity and incorporates a 3-port FireWire repeater and a 3-port USB hub. By stacking G-MINI directly under a Mac mini, up to 750 GB of additional storage can be added to the system to manage large music, video and digital photo files. A variable speed fan and integrated heat sink provide optimum cooling to ensure reliable and trouble free operation.
"G-MINI is the perfect solution to expand the storage capacity and flexibility of any Mac mini or iMac computer," said Roger Mabon, President of G-Technology, Inc. "With storage capacities up to a roomy 750 GB, three powered FireWire 400 ports and a 3-port USB hub, G-MINI supercharges Mac mini and iMac systems."
The G-MINI will be available in February in 250, 320, 500 and 750 GB capacities with list prices of $199, $229, $329 and $599 respectively.

Looking at the PDF. another PLASTIC MiniStack/MacPower clone and that while G Tech makes such nice stylish ALUMINUM external drives....
So it's still LaCie and Sabrent only which makes the nice aluminum drives?

| I haven't seen a SATA II drive being used in one of these Mac mini style enclosures before. I wonder if they'll sell you an empty one? |

Did not realise it had an SATA II drive connection. I thought MacPower had at least SATA connection and somewhat different connections available...

So who really builds these things?
Anyway, I gave a brief review of my miniStack V2 (got it this week) in the miniStack V2 topic. As I go on, I have noticed that even when the mini is inactive (on, but not using it) the disk fan has to cycle on and off. To me that means ventilation is inadequate, and the heat sink on the bottom doesn't do much.
Still nice looking tho', and holds a sizable disk.  The fan noise is fairly low, not like some whooshing big fan on a tower.
I eliminated two other disks with this one, and gained ports ports ports!

| It's a real downer about it being plastic. I'm also not a fan of the big "G" on it. The only drive I really like bulit for the mini is the LaCie one. |

Yup, just saw it MacWorld today. A miniStack clone. I like my LaCie. Nice and quiet. No fan, just the spinning of the drive.

| It's sad that they make such good looking aluminum drives for the Mac Pro and PowerMac G5, and for the Mac mini they make it out of plastic... |

Exactly, their G-Drive's were actually some of my favorite. I know a few people that have them and they have great quality (build/performance).

I've heard they make nice stuff. I looked at one of their G-DRIVE minis one time. I also don't mind the "G" they put on the front of their stuff. It makes me think about...

Damn, I just spent a few months looking for a good firewire SATA enclosure to use with my mini and a 400GB drive I had bought, which I didn't realize was SATA until it arrived. I don't feel as bad as since it looks like they don't offer this sans disk. BTW, I got the enclosure that's linked in my sig.
I really wanted the mini form factor and hubs, but I settled for a decent looking alluminum firewire enclosure.
