I kicked off our new poll forum yesterday by asking about the iPhone.
So, I ask today: Will you buy the Apple TV?
I answered yes to this poll.
I ordered one the day it was released. I don't plan on using it personally, but we needed a test unit for the site. I currently use a 1.66GHz Mac mini with a 42" Dell plasma for HTPC-type purposes. |

It's got to be a no for me.
I'd really like to be able to get a device like this.
Unfortunatly its too restrictive.
1. Itunes sucks. (Or more specifically it's not for me, I like to do things my way, again restrictive)
2. It wont play my media. I have lots of media in various formats that I want to be able to play. Re-encoding it not an option because it will produce too much loss.
Given all this and other things I'll probably end up using my core solo for the purpose when I get a new mac. |

I'm going to get one, but I'm waiting until I get my widescreen first. _________________

Bought one on Tuesday. I think Apple TV will work out nice for us G4 and G5 owners looking for Front Row fun. As for iTunes DRM, I don't encode my media in a lot of different formats, so it doesn't bother me. The ability to play Video TS would've been nice though. But hey, that can be said about Front Row. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| I'm undecided, but leaning towards buying one. I'd really like to read a few real world reviews before making my mind up. |

| I'm confused about exactly what it does, but I think that in the future I'll be buying one. |

Well do I just watch tv and movies and listen to music through it? So its basically a computer without the os, being replaced with front row.
What reason should I use this over my mac mini?!
And does the Apple store only allow you to buy movies and tv programs from it once you've got Apple TV? |

It's actually a pretty simple device. It lets you stream media from your Mac or PC (yuck) to a TV. Or you can sync up to 40GB worth of your iTunes and iPhoto library onto the hard drive. You cannot buy stuff from the iTMS directly from the Apple TV. You can watch movie trailers though. |

Pretty much yeah. Unfortunately though, here in the uk the itunes music store does not yet sell movies. so that function won't be useable for us until they do!
The way I understand it the apple tv will play any movies that itunes can, so it's mp4 format only I think. _________________ mac mini coreduo 1.66ghz. 1.25gb 60gb HD

40GB and you cant connect a external HD, plus it works best with the new airport extreme BS. With a mini you still have a OS, able to surf, a DVD player and a bigger HD. plus you can connect a external HD & play your TS folders.
Apple TV: $300
AirPort BS $179
Total $479
It seems like a better deal to use a mini with front row.
Plus you can add Leopard.

I watch content on my 20" ACD, and I have a very good sound system on the mini, so I said no.
I think I'd retire my G4 mini to the living room before I'd buy this device. |
