Overclocked!

here's my after benchmark

http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc2=120569

improved the score a little bit, but overall system responsiveness seems much higher

overclock stable... Glucas tested for quite some time

Not a bad overclock. Are you going to try for 1.58?

considering this is a 3 day old mini... i'm a little uneasy about going that far..its an option down the line, but when you go to 1.58 and beyond you have to change some things in OS X via command line @ boot up so that system profiler sees your speed properly, because open firmware doesnt like showing speeds it doesn't expect

that and i dont want to cut the life of my cpu too much, or have the fan on high all the time

Well, you don't actually have to modify the open-firmware; that is just so it looks pretty in the About This Mac dialog window. The Mini still runs fine at that speed, well, some a lot of Minis do, not all. Having the fan on high might be nice, though; it'd cover up the sound of an external drive with the more pleasing noise of Apple's brushless fan.

You obviously never had any experience with the notorious Wind Tunnel G4's. I have one of those towers (they came out in 2001) and it only recently became quieter after I replaced the power supply. My PM G5 is heaven in comparison.

It would've been nice to have run the test a couple times on 10.4.1 and then on 10.4.2. All benchmarks vary some, so the increase that you see could just be inherent variability in the benchmarking suite. Fits with what everyone is saying, though.

Because you're running off of the really slow internal hard drive. I guess you got one of the 4200rpm internal ones.

Yea, I looked up the stats and it is a 4200.

But check out this one I had done shortly after the overclocking....

As useful as xbench is, it has been known to throw out some unreliable scores from time to time. For example; I scored a 148 one time on my Mini. Accurate? Not likely. Especially since I know that my scores are typically around 119. You're better off taking multiple samples and tossing the occasional outliers (such as my 148 score). After a few samples you'll have a better impression of where your score should lie. And Susurrus is right. Unfortunately, the disk is almost always the most limiting factor in your system's performance.
