Apple today premiered Apple TV, an easy to use and fun way to wirelessly play all your favorite iTunes content from your Mac or PC on your widescreen TV, including movies, TV shows, music, photos and podcasts. Using Apple TV's stunning new interface, anyone can quickly browse and view their entire collection of digital media from across the room using the simple and intuitive Apple Remote. Apple TV easily connects to almost all modern widescreen televisions, and will be shipping in February for just $299.
"Apple TV is like a DVD player for the 21st century—you connect it to your entertainment system just like a DVD player, but it plays digital content you get from the Internet rather than DVDs you get from a physical store," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Apple TV plays the same iTunes content that users enjoy on their computers and iPods, so now they can even watch part of a movie in their living room, and watch the rest later on their iPod."
Apple TV has a 40GB hard drive to store up to 50 hours of video, 9,000 songs, 25,000 photos or a combination of each and is capable of delivering high-definition 720p output. Apple TV is easy to connect to a broad range of widescreen TVs and home theater systems and comes standard with HDMI, component video, analog and optical audio ports. Using high-speed AirPort 802.11 wireless networking, Apple TV can auto-sync content from one computer or stream content from up to five additional computers right to your TV without any wires.
The seamless integration of Apple TV and iTunes lets users choose from over 250 feature-length movies and 350 TV shows in near DVD quality; four million songs, 5,000 music videos, 100,000 podcasts and 20,000 audiobooks. Users can enjoy their favorite music on a home entertainment system and view slideshows of their photo albums on a widescreen TV. Apple TV makes it easy for users to explore their entire media collection with an easy to use and intuitive new interface. Strange, I always had the impression it was the same size as the Mac mini (6.5 x 6.5).

Sounds like 720p max, doesn't sound like you can do much more with it than you could do with Front Row.
With a 40GB drive and an Intel processor, you'd hope it ran OS X and was capable of doing much more. |

Again, this is a streaming device so you don't have to place your computer next to your TV. It is not meant to do much more. If you want something more, just buy a Mac Mini.

Actually it's not only a streaming device. It's a full-fledged playback+streaming+storage device (40GB hard drive built-in).
From what I understand you could put movies/songs/photos on it, then bring it to someone else's house to watch the stored media.
You're correct that it doesn't seem able to replace even a Mac mini. Strange, given the specs. It could've been a "Mac for your living room". After all, if you can run Safari on the Apple iPhone screen, you sure can do it on a TV, even if only in 640x480.
Will we soon see a "Mac nano"? I think they can't make it smaller than 6.5 x 6.5 because of CDs and DVDs, the only way to make it smaller would be to make it less than 2" thick, but at that size, why even botter, it's not a portable device like an iPod. |

Yeah you're right. I'm sure most of us will crack this thing open and upgrade the hard drive.

Just saying there's a lot of hardware there for what little it does. I hope Apple finds something more to do with it. |

The top was updated at 4:06PM, before that it was only quick specs. I posted mine at 4:01PM, thus before the "story" was completely posted. 
The unit still supports 1080i, even if it is upconverted from 720p, that still makes 1080i a supported resolution. So if you want to run it, the max you can is 1080i.

Yep, it does do 1080i.
For me, I'll stick with a Mac Mini - because I want to retain a DVD drive and have some control over what file formats I stream. |

I don't understand why people are so hung up on watching YouTube, and Google Video on their TV sets.
I don't want that crappy low res video anywhere near my 56" 1080p set.
I can watch that on my desktop.

I'd like to watch H.264 IPTV on my HDTV, the same H.264 channels I can watch on my computer using Media Central.
And watch other IPTV content, like I do with Democracy.
And yes, watch an occasional You Tube video while sitting on my couch, if that's OK.
Will Apple TV let me do that, I ask rhetorically? No, it won't. I was hoping not to have to spend money on a second Mini to hook up to my TV.
I'd love to have access to enough free content to cancel my cable TV. That's why the Apple TV is a disappointment to me. It seems to be a conduit to iTunes content, and nothing more.
