I was playing an audio cd yesterday and the mini locked up. I boot from the firewire (minimate) drive. The internal drive is no longer bootable. I did a hard reboot and now iI get the folder with the ? and the CD is stuck in it. I tried the 'C' key thing and nothing. Any thoughts? Thanks

I would try open the Mac mini's case and disconnect the CD drive. Then boot up without the CD drive connected. Once you have the drive out you might be able to get the jammed disk out. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

This may or may not help you. It's an Apple Support article about ejecting CDs from a slot-loading iMac G4. I would think the procedure would be similar for the Mini. Worth a try, I guess. _________________ Computer Engineer

Good info incase of an emergency. I didn't know a paper clip would do it with the slot type drive. |

Pretty much all disc drives released have an emergency release ability, even slot loading ones. The problem is figuring out what it is. Normally it is accessible from the outside somehow, also. _________________ Computer Engineer

boot up pushing mouse in cliked position ejects media before booting. |

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Turns out my external hard drive crashed. Swapped in a backup and the disc ejected and everything worked. Problem is, the drive was in the minimate and I wonder if the heat got to it. It is so new, i still haven't lost the reciept for it yet

I'm keeping mine handy! Nice to see the miniStack comes with a two year warranty. That's better than ours. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

| The problem has turned out not to be the drive. The drive is fine and readable again. The compuer freezes during a backup. I went to backup the backup drive I booted from and the same thing happened. It froze, I hard rebooted and no drive found, usb or fw. I installed Tiger to the internal drive and booted from that. I hadn't turned off the minimate. I opened finder and there was the drive. I set it as the startup drive and it worked!? I started a backup and it froze again. When I rebooted it was still ok. ??? I backed up by copying stuff manually and it seemed fine. I believe this all started since the last upgrade. |

What software are you using to do the backup? There may be weird issues with it and Tiger that causes crazy stuff like this to happen.
So, booting from the internal drive is fine but booting from or backing up to the external is causing freezes? _________________ Computer Engineer

I tried both CCC and SuperDuper. Yes, it appears to be a fw thing. I haven't tried USB, yet. I saw a few posts like this on apple's forum, but no answers. |

It'll probably be fixed in 10.4.2 because I hear that Apple is fixing every known bug in Tiger. _________________ Computer Engineer
