iPod not showing up in iTunes?

Ok, I feel like a complete idiot here. I just got my first iPod last night, transferred all my music, videos, ect and now I'm having trouble getting it to connect to itunes.

I plugged it in to a usb port, connected the cable to the ipod, the backlight came on and it said "Do not disconnect" for a couple of seconds and then went straight to the main screen. Itunes didn't open, if iTunes was open, the ipod didn't show up there or mount on the desktop.

Please, can someone tell me what is wrong? Am I missing something?

I tried a 3rd usb port and it started to work... Strange, because all of the ports worked fine with a flash card reader. Oh well, at least it is working now.
