Fujitsu Announces 250GB/300GB 2.5" Hard Drives
Monday, December 11, 2006
Posted by: Glenn
Fujitsu today announced the global launch of its MHX2300BT series of mobile hard disk drives. The newest Fujitsu products feature impressive storage capacities of 250GB and 300GB, the first 2.5" PMR hard disk drives in the industry to attain these high levels of capacity.
In March, Fujitsu successfully launched the world's first 2.5" Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drive to feature up to 200GB of storage space. Today, less than a year later, Fujitsu sets the standard even higher as it introduces its latest ultra-high capacity mobile hard disk drive series. Engineered using perpendicular magnetic recording technology, which is essential to achieving the increased capacity per platter, the new small form factor HDDs will address the growing demand for higher capacity storage solutions.
According to the company, additional benefits of its second generation PMR products include best-in-class low power consumption at 1.6W as well as high shock tolerance and near-silent operation. These qualities make the MHX2300BT series highly desirable for audio/video (A/V) applications such as gaming, video editing, audio recording and DVR functionality, as well as for the high-end personal computing market.
The MHX2300BT series will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2007.

| too bad its only 4200rpm, thatd be tits if it were 7200 for an internal drive. |

Except that's it's a PMR drive. Perpendicular recording means the information takes a lot less surface area, so you can't compare a conventional 7200 RPM with a perpendicular 4200 RPM drive.
Depending on the density of the PMR, that 4200 RPM could very well be the equivalent of 10 000 RPMs if not more. Look at the transfer rates for a real comparison.
And at 4200 RPM, it'll be a lot less noisy and consume less power/generate less heat, good things for laptops (and the Mac mini).
My question is: how much will these cost? |

The higher the density of PMR drives will be, the higher the data rate should be. It wouldn't even surprise me to see slower RPM perpendicular drives in the future. Imagine a 2.5", 500GB, 2400 RPM drive with a transfer rate of 200MB/sec.
Edit: it seems this new drive isn't faster than other 2.5" drives. |

Other 2.5" drives in general or other 4200 rpm 2.5" drives? _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

| thatd be swell, i like the external ministack still tho cause of its extra firewire and usb ports, but that would be a sweet upgrade just to speed up the internal drive while keeping it cool im sure the pricetag on it will turn me away tho haha |

It would be nice to see a thinner miniStack version that uses 2.5" drives. You can fit two 2.5" drives side-by-side inside a case the size of a Mac mini, so imagine the Belkin Mac mini hub but with one or two 2.5" drives in them.
The downside would be a product that's much more expensive, however. |

This good news. Prices for 120GB, 160GB and 200GB drives should start falling soon.

I think Fujitsu is focusing on capacity, whereas Seagate is trying to get a mixture of both things. They supposedly have a few high capacity models running at 5200RPM and 7200RPM coming out this spring. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Is it quivering because you want one or because it's afraid to hear the price?
I wonder what these babies are going to be selling for??? |

| I've been thinking about upgrading to the 160GB 5400-RPM Seagate. They have dropped well below $200 now. |
