One quick Ram question!!!

hey guys

I've been reading the forum and trying to not ask NooB questions...

But i just had a rotten experience and Im making sure i dont go through it again. I installed some real cheap 3rd party ram (512), and it sent my mini in to kernel panic like crazy and my HD became damaged horribly through the process. But now im looking at getting KINGSTON ram (thats what my local apple tech told me he orders to put in the mac's, but he is charging way to much...)

I found a 1gb stick here in Canada at tiger direct....can you please tell me if this will work ok in the mini? Im avoiding a disaster again... It is pc 2700...thats fine right?

I bought Kingston PC2700 ram 1GB for my mini and had 3 or 4 Kernal Panics a day. Returned it and ordered 1GB PQI PC2700 for $100 (now $80) from newegg and haven't had a Kernal panic in 5 months since.

I got the kingston 1GB pc2700 which ive had for a week. No problems. At $50 after rebate its a steel.

whats a Kernal Panic?

A LOT of people here (myself included) have gotten the 1GB PQI ram from NewEgg and have had great luck with it.

Hey guys...

Im so confused as to the ram Im gonna purchase. I dont want kernel panics anymore, or any shitty errors....

I thought kingston was the way to go, but apparantly one member there said he had kernel panics with it...

what about this samsung, lifetime warranty ram?

I got my PQI 1gb stick in the mail yesterday, the same model mavherzog is talking about. I got it installed by a local store, thats certified by Apple. Took it home, booted it up, seemed to work fine. Then Firefox, Safari, System Preferences, etc started to crash when I was using it. I figured it might be the ram, or the hard drive. So I did a disk repair, I got an error about "the underlying task could not exit" or something like that. I rebooted. Apple grey/white screen showed up, then my computer turns off.

It won't boot from a CD. I mounted as a firewire disk to my iBook. Backuped my files, ran DiskWarrior from my iBook onto the mac mini. It fixed serveral things. Mac Mini would now boot off the HD or CD/DVD. OS X starts to boot, then just brings me to a console. I decide to do a fresh install of Tiger, it checks the disk, prepares to install and then oh, wait.. no it freezes and tells me to reboot. Everytime.

Anyways, to make a long story short, Im about to head back to the store to get them to take out the 1gb stick and see if thats the problem. If not, off to Apple it goes Sad

Sorry to hear that after all the deliberating you (probably) still got stuck with a bad RAM stick. Too bad you didn't install it yourself or you'd have some resolution much quicker.

Sounds like it's better that the shop installed it to me. In case something got damaged etc. Doesn't sound like they tested it though.

Yea, I hope it's just the ram thats the problem... if it is, would I send it back to TigerDirect, or PQI to get a refund?

I'd feel kinda uneasy about just getting a replacement, what if that kind of ram just doesn't like my mini. Maybe I should go for kingston Confused

I would say ask whoever installed it to test it for you. It shouldn't be too hard for them to do. If it doesn't work, ship it back to TigerDirect for a replacement. If it does "work", ship it back to TigerDirect for a refund or different product saying that that model didn't work in your computer. PQI shouldn't get involved unless it's after the reseller's (TigerDirect) warranty (usually 30 days).

Hmm well I just got back from the shop. They popped the old 256mb stick back in, and its working fine now (reinstalling Tiger as I spea- err... type). They did a test on the 1gb PQI and it failed. So its defective.

After waiting for 15mins on the phone for TigerDirect, they tell me I have to get a RMA from PQI, and I can't get a cash refund :/

I think what Im going to do is buy a 1gb Kingston, and get my PQI RMA'd and sell it to someone. Least I know it was the ram! Kind of a pain in the ass since I have to reinstall everything again though.
