It may be a stupid question, I've been away from the forum for a little while (been hangin around 123macbook.com quite alot) and I notice that we have all got spots next to our names when we post. Are they in some way related to the number of posts or length of time we've been members or something else?

I have 3 green ones, is that good!?

cheers Smile

It's relative to your # of posts/member level.
It's a quick visual guide instead of having to read the # of posts.

More balls = more posts

Gold = special (like the little gold stars in elementary school Smile )

Quote from admin
"Well, we thought gold (yellow) would represent the highest ranking and make it special."

It's all new and is likely still open to change.

i never really got the whole 'more posts = cooler' thing

what does it matter?
the only bragging rights you have are on the forum itself, and they're aren't really anything to be bragging about anyways

I think a quick visual reference for rankings might be handy. Your feedback would be appreciated. Like? Dislike?

I brag about my number of posts off the forum all the time. People really seem interested Wink (That's sarcasm).

Some people think the number of posts thing is cool, some don't. We are all entitled to our own opinions.

I think there is value in displaying the number of posts.

Examples (in my opinion):
It can give a member credibility. If that person has an opinion or is giving advice, you may look at their number of posts and decide how much, you will value their opinion.

It helps people bond. I remember when Slickrick and I were at the same number of posts I shot him an email. We've been emailing back and for through PM ever since. I now know much more about him. (Hi Rick Smile )

It can give a feeling of trust. eg. If a member is trying to sell something through the classifieds. Would you rather purchase from a member with 500 posts on this forum or 1? The person with 1 could be a spammer.

The number of posts can show how passionate a member is about their mini.

Whether it is cool, uncool, helpful or not, the number of posts means a number of different things to people. Make of it what you will. You may even want to have a little bit of fun in the process Wink

p.s. I average 3.6 posts a day. I've been at this for a while, its not a race. If you view your profile you can see what your average is. You may be more addicted than I am and not know it Smile

Too bad computers aren't capable of parsing and identifying quality posts.

On some of the car forums I spend time on, there's people who have 8,000 posts, but at least 60% are replies like "lol" or "oh, i know", etc.

Apple forums allow the questioner to rate the reply, that's useful but complicated.

Oh I forgot...

LOL

Just like on eBay. I'm not going to buy something from a brand new member. If you really want it badly, go for it. But I know a few sellers who have made new names because they give bad service or rip off people!
