I was given a nearly fully loaded Mac Mini as a birthday gift last month. I've used Winders for many years, despite hating the Evil Empire, and I tried escaping by going to Linux, but the apps just were not there.

Now that I've had a chance to get used to OS X I must say that it is clearly the best, most well designed opeating system I've ever used.

So, yesterday I ordered a Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac.

Now I'm in "Is it here yet" mode.

Thanks, Curt!

I'll keep the mini. I have a 4 port DVI KVM on my desk, so it will be close
at hand even after I get the Power Mac.

We have many, many computers here in our house. We both work from home for far away computer industry manufacturing firms, telecommuting every day.

In our garage, also known as a server room, we have a 19" rack with a 24 port gigabit switch and a number of network appliances and servers. So having one more computer is hardly a change.

Cool! My next Mac will be an Intel powered Powerbook. I have old an old G3 iMac, 12" Powerbook. and the Mac mini. Why all the servers? Do you host or run websites?

I was tempted to wait for an InteliMac, but the mini just can't drive my 1600 by 1200 LCD through my KVM at native resolution. I have to crank it down to 1280 by 1024 and then the aliasing and the ow it hurts me. I sure hope my PowerMac will work through the KVM.

I do in fact have a large number of websites, see a partial list at
http://steveswebhosting.com/ but the servers in our house have nothing to do with my websites, they are all hosted on a dedicated server in Texas.

Some of the servers here run software that gathers performance data from network appliances that my employer manufactures. Some just generate traffic the appliances can monitor. I write technical docs about these software and hardware products.

Some of the servers are just there as network attached storage to backup our other computers.

And one has video files that have been recorded by our ReplayTV, and which we can watch on any of the computers attached to our gigabit LAN. This machine has nearly a terabyte total of internal and external hard drives. Take that, Hollywood!

I think I'm a geek Smile

Now that sounds cool! I have two external 250GB hard drives with 50-60 movies on them. Thanks Blockbuster! Wink

Ranter,

How the heck can you manage to run so many websites? You must have some awesome time management skills.

Not watching television is my main strategy...
