MacBook Superdrive Upgrade?

Is it possible to upgrade the combo drive on a MacBook to a superdrive?

Yes it is "possible"....

You would have to take apart your MacBook and get to the optical drive. Which is the easy part.

I think the biggest barrier is this. The MacBooks use a smaller optical drive than the Mini! MacBooks and 15" MacBook Pros use ultra-slimline optical drives, smaller than the slimline drives in both the iMac and Mac Mini. They are harder to find online. But you can still get them, they just happen to be twice as expensive as regular slimline drives.

they esentially are just thinner optical drives that cut down on the bulk of the motors, and other stuff in the under part of the drives. In most slim laptops the laptops are as thin as their optical drive lets them since the HDD is already under 1cm in modern laptops, so a thinner optical drive was a simple solution. On my laptop the optical drive is 1.6cm thick and the base is 1.9cm total and then the screen is only 0.9 cm thick. I've cracked my laptop open before and there is a 4mm gap between the components and the casing with out the optical drive.
