Slow mini

Hi there, As a life time of PC user, I came upon a killer deal on a 1.66 core duo mini. It was a demo model at compusa. I don't know if it's because it was a demo model and customers messed it up. But, compared to my toshiba laptop its very very slow. For example, I installed Office 04 and it takes about 50 /60 seconds to open a word doc. Other apps are just as slow. I also find that sometimes I can type faster than the system can keep up. Is this normal performance? is there anything I can do to speed this thing up?

I would also do a clean install of OS X. It's possible that something was corrupted or deleted while it was on display.

If you do decide top reinstall do a custom reinstall and save about 10Gb of HDD. Before you do that try repairing permisiions from Disk Utility.

Depending on the state it was left in get hold of Onyx and give it a thorough service.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did reinstall the OS, but I didn't reformat the HD during the process. I'll give that a try. If I do a custom install, what should I leave off?
Regarding RAM, do they require matched pairs? Can I add just a one gig stick?

You should not need 2gb of ram to use word! however it is running through rosetta and the only way I've found of improving performance there is by throwing more ram at it.

Are your native intel apps running slowly as well? If not then it is most likely a rosetta issue.

You don't have to use ram in matched pairs (in my macbook i have 1x256mb and 1x1gb modules) but they perform about 5% better if they match. I bought my 1gb stick because in the long run it will cost me less to upgrade to 2gb than if I had gone the matched ram route.

Thanks for all the great replys. I downloaded and ran the ONYX utility and that made a huge difference. Is't running way faster now.
