iMage USB webcam for Macs
Tuesday, October, 10, 2006

Ecamm Network and Pico Instruments today announced the immediate availability of the iMage USB Webcam. The lightweight, portable webcam delivers high-quality video to any popular Mac video application, including iChat AV, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype and Photo Booth. Employing USB video standards, the iMage webcam requires no device drivers to be installed prior to use with Mac OS X or Windows XP. Ecamm includes special iMage Plugin software to provide complete iChat compatibility.

The webcam's unique industrial design is the product of Pico Instruments' consumer electronics expertise. iMage requires no special fittings or attachments to be mounted above a notebook screen, sit on a desktop, attach magnetically or mount on a standard camera tripod. The iMage USB Webcam is priced at $59.95.

I don't really like the looks of the camera, but there are ugly ones out there. I mean they might be able to sell a few of these while Apple is monkeying around with the iSight getting it up to UK standards. The last time I looked, there was still a 2-3 week wait for the iSight.

Now there are compatible USB webcams! I just bought about a month ago a 2nd hand Logitech Quick Cam Zoom from which the original Logitech drivers just did not work at all, Macam barely and it looks like the cheapiest cam ever, so had to purchase a licence from IOXperts, which makes the camera worth while. That is to say, it works with the Skype Beta until the processor runs wild (still Beta you know) and tried it also with aMSN. But since I have a router connected, aMSN does not create a picture for my 'buddies' anymore Sad Oh well, maybe I totally paid about the same amount, the Logitech looks cooler than this "thing" Wink

Nice cam, and it doubles as a bar of soap if you run out one morning Rolling Eyes

Looks like the designer came up with it while putting in time on the throne. I can see the creative mind at work now, 'if I set it on the floor and replace the roll of TP with....'

It sure does.

I was thinking it looks like it should snap on top of the LaCie Brick.

"White" of course

I wish Apple would come out with a new iSight that was a little smaller. I'd also like to see them bundle Photobooth with the bloody thing. Mad

Well… look at the iSight's that are built into the current books and iMacs and then consider that it's hard to find an iSight in stock right now.

Biggest retail season starts in a month or so…

Change is good. Anything is possible.

Well, a new iSight would definitely be on my Christmas wish list. I thought there were some rumors about a new one coming out, but they seemed to fizzle out. It just seems like an update is long overdue.

Why USB?
Hard to tell from their website pics, but I guess that stand loops over the top of a portable so the only way to aim it is by angling the screen...dumb.

And just how much space do the electronics need? A lot of enclosures (not just compu stuff) are made way too big as people seem to think bigger is better Shocked

I'm sure the iSight's large lens contributes to the overall size as much as the electronics. The mixture of lens quality and firewire is what makes the iSight so appealing to me. I really don't want a USB cam. Of course, knowing my luck, the new iSight will end up having a smaller lens and be USB powered. Laughing

Guys I don't understand why you think this is ugly - the original iSight is no better IMO. Integrated makes so much more sense.

Maybe ugly is the wrong word—it just doesn't have much style.
If I didn't already have an iSight, I'd probably consider it. But USB . . . Question

iSight specs (not built-in)
Sensor 1/4-inch color CCD image sensor, 640x480 VGA resolution
(iMage has1/7-inch)1/4" is large? I must be missing something

I'll take brushed aluminum with serious glass inside any day over a bar of soap perched on a magnet. That said, the integrated iSight in the new iMacs is the way to go, it's not quite as nice as the FireWire version but it is out of sight/out of mind when you aren't using it.
