Apple today announced that it plans to launch a new product called iTV, a device that attaches to a television and can wirelessly receive and play digital content from any computer running iTunes software. iTV will be controllable with the Apple Remote and features a built-in power supply, USB 2.0 port, Ethernet port, 802.11 wireless connectivity, optical audio, RCA stereo audio jacks, component video, and HDMI port. The new device will be available in the first quarter of 2007, with a suggested retail price of $299.

You realise just how much cheaper it'll be to bring your mini downstairs and plug it in directly, right? Razz

I take it that it would be more reliable if you connected it thru the ethernet.... especially since some of us have a lot of interference in our homes and neighborhood.

Laughing I'd probably spray paint this thing black too, just like my Mini.

It does look like it'll fit in beautifully with a majority of home entertainment systems, but I've no doubt it'll be around the £200 mark (probably $200+), which would be far too pricey for the likes of me.

That's not an option for me. I want the ability to watch video content from the mini on the TV in one room, while my partner surfs the web or whatever on the mini in another room.

So for me, this is cheaper than buying a second mini, assuming the hardware will handle the load.

Apple is going to sell bajillions of these.

One more thought--it's highly unusual for Apple to announce a product this far in advance of the ship date.

I'm guessing they want to use the announcement to put some pressure on someone. Say, a few recalcitrant movie studios?

It would be more than a little foolish for them to release a device that wouldn't do high-def video well enough in this day and age. The lowest spec mac will now do high-res video comfortably.

I hope people realise I was joking, I think it's about time we had devices like these for those of us that can't afford another computer just to play videos on.

as for my HTPC:
Apple, that´s (almost) all I ask of you....

can it handle DVD content on external HD such as Media Theatre?
what's about IP/Tv?
will it be able to fill my 50" Plasma screen w/o pillar box or overscanned menues (a.K. better than todays MacMini)?
what`s about sat/cable (somewhat like eyTV)?
can it cope with pay TV (common interface such as eyTV) ?
will my spun and children be able to handle it?

Well, I am glad to have my home refurbished including gigabit ethernet cables across the stores - looking forward to the all digital home TV future Cool

I believe a lightly trained monkey would be able to handle frontrow (it really is simplicity itself); kids and technophobes would have no problem with it whatsoever.

And it sounds like it's just a media streamer, so it won't interfere with the rest of your TV boxes; presumably it'll act as a passthrough when turned off like most set-top boxes.

From the picts it dosen't look like it will be a pass through device. You will have to hook it to one of your inputs and switch between tv and the computer signal.
