Apple today updated its Mac mini line computers. The entire line now features Intel Core Duo processors, but the company has not increased the prices. The $799 model now includes a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor, and the $599 model now includes a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from a 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor. Apple also started to offer 160GB hard drives as a build-to-order option.

The new 1.66GHz Mac mini, for a suggested retail price of $599 (US), includes:
- 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor;
- 512MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, expandable up to 2GB;
- a slot-load Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive;
- 60GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 5400 rpm;
- Intel GMA950 graphics processor;
- built-in AirPort Extreme wireless networking & Bluetooth 2.0+EDR;
- Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 BASE-T);
- four USB 2.0 ports;
- one audio line in and one audio line out port, each supporting both optical digital and analog;
- DVI-out port for external display (VGA-out adapter included, Composite/S-Video out adapter sold separately)
- Apple Remote.

A bit below what one could have expected, really, and pretty underwhelming. Meroms nowhere to be found, not even in the portables (at least not yet).

All this upgraded hardware in advance of the September 12th event means something really big and new is coming, though.

A bit of a disappointment because I was hoping for C2D... but there is a silver lining here. If Apple had introduced a high-end C2D model at $799, I would have bought that. Now that the $599 model is CD, it is very appealing for those not interested in extra HD space or the SuperDrive (I don't need either). So Apple just saved me $200 and I certainly appreciate that. Who is Apple kidding here? The price of the Mac mini should have fallen at least $100 if they are going to continue using the Core Duo. I'm very disappointed!

It's interesting that the Mini still does not support the large (30") display. Should we expect a new system to be announced on the 12th which will?

Hot Rodder or not... Apple's "modesty" doesn't seem to reflect the current technology. IMHO it represents a Immediate sales boost, maybe they are fulfilling contracts to move a certain amount of chips for "said" company, or reducing inventory of a massive amount of chips that need to go. There is no reason Apple couldn't have multiple mini configurations. Rather than lower end and not-so low end. Let's see ultra high end in every line from Apple.
