I have seen a HD enclosure combined with USB2/FW hub that looks like the mini. Who sells this in the US?

The only one shipping is the Micronet miniMate. I personally own the 160GB model. There is some noise with the drive but the Hub works good.

Phasing out firewire seems specious to me also. There's no way that's going to happen. Even PC users know the speed advantage of firewire, especially when it comes to external HDs.

Unfortunately, it's not so clear as to whether one can boot from some enclosures or not. The makers really don't do a good job in stating it. It seems like a consensus that the Oxford 911 chipset allows for it though.

There are lots of options (although they might look like what you want), look at newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=92
