Apple Lowers Prices on Cinema Displays
Monday, August 7, 2006
Apple today lowered the prices on its line of Cinema Displays across the board. So, that means the "D" in BYODKM for the Mac mini just got a little more affordable. The 20-inch Cinema Display offering 1680 x 1050 resolution, is now priced at $699, down from $799. The mid-range 23-inch Cinema HD offering 1920 x 1200 resolution is now priced at $999, down from $1299. And the 30-inch Cinema HD model now retails for $1999, down from $2499. It should be noted that the 30-inch Cinema HD is not compatible with the Mac mini.
Update: Several members wrote in about the 20" and 23" Cinema Displays getting a bump in their specs, in addition to the price cuts they received.
The 20" Cinema Display now has a brightness of 300 cd/m2 (that's up from 250 cd/m2).
The 23" Cinema Display now has a brightness of 400 cd/m2 (that's up from 270 cd/m2).
Both models now feature a 700:1 contrast ratio (that's up from 400:1).

Me too. I've wanted the 23" ACD for the longest time for my photo work. Just wish I could get that educational discount on top of it. |

I am going to hold out. Apple does this before they release new products pretty often. Dell is ahead of Apple in terms of contrast ratios and refresh rates - all of Apple's screens are still 14ms, when Dell's are in the single digits. I am not a big fan of Dell (or their logo plastered all over the place) so I am going to wait until some new, faster ACDs come out and I will be placing my order for a 23".

I gotta admit I'm glad they didn't replace them... at least yet, anyway. So far the only piece of my recently acquired Mac equipment that's obsolete now is the single-button Bluetooth mouse. But eventually, it all will be.
I expect prices to fall, so that doesn't bother me. I once paid $440 for 18 256 KILObit RAM chips and $800 for a Hayes Smartmodem 9600 when it first came out.

Is Bluetooth obsolete already?
But seriously, sometimes the old ways are better. I prefer my one-button Apple Pro Mouse. Actually, I have two, and I'm sticking with them.

No, but single-button is - they have released a Bluetooth Mighy Mouse so there is a double-button choice.

I think 247 knows that  I think he's jokingly making the point he believes Bluetooth will be obsolete before the single-button mouse, which some believe is never. I'm not sure they're wrong, either.

Yes, I do, but no, I actually have no opinion about Bluetooth. I just like my Pro Optical Mouse. When Apple introduced it, SJ called it the best mouse ever, the reviewers agreed, and I still think it is, despite the fickelness of Apple's cheerman. |

I agree, that would be very disappointing if they did replace them today for those of you who have recently acquired one. Since my foray into the Mac world was so late in the game for the current ACDs, I have decided to sit on my cash and wait.
I am in no rush anyway, I've got 2 years!  |

Hey I paid $800 for my first 9600 baud modem too. But then mine was a trendy portable AND they charged me the wrong price, it should have been $900 inc tax!
Come to think of it I'm sure I still have that modem in pristine condition.

Here in the Netherlands I still pay € 799 ($1025.51) € 1149 ($ 1474.37) and € 2249 ($ 2885.87) that is including 19% tax, but even without it it still way more expensive. So the only way to afford a screen here is 2nd hand or an altrnative...
