Are these Dells a better deal than macs? Hardware wise they are very impressive. (of course, they dont have the style of a mac)

They also don't run OS X. Kind of a deal breaker. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Yes but if they did, they would be a better deal. _________________ Hector David Salinas

When it comes to pc's, I tend to stay away from Dell's. If you're going to get it, make sure you get the extended warranty coverage and make sure you back up your data regularly. You're more likely to need it, from my experience. _________________ Folding for a cure for Team Mac OS X, the number one Mac Folding team in the world! |

I believe it's called Dell hell. You'll understand where that term comes from when you try calling one of their outsourced support centers. I gotta admit though, those little white and silver XPS towers look kinda cool. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I am not planning on getting one of these. I already have a dell at work which is one of the the most boring PCs I have ever used. I want a mac!
I was just comparing its hardware to what apple offers _________________ Hector David Salinas

Kind of like saying "No, my Hyundai isn't as fast as a Maserati, but if it were, it would be a better deal" because we all know the hidden power lurking underneath a Hyundai Accent's hood.
Couldn't help it, had to be the smart-ass. Sorry. _________________ ~Mac Mini Core Duo / 512Mb / 80Gb / Tascam US-122~

true...
Lesson learned: on a mac, the OS is the most expensive item. _________________ Hector David Salinas

Just make sure you don't get a Dell laptop. Don't want one of those bad boys blowin' up on you. _________________

They also don't run OS X. Kind of a deal breaker. | It seems, if you have the right hardware in the right system. It is indeed possible to get OS X on a PC.

Ask Donut, supposedly she has a Dell PC running OS X. _________________

Your question is "Are Dells a better deal than Macs"
I prefer to use the word value.
I would say that Macs are better value. The OS X point has already been made. So I'll focus on other areas.
I value my computer being quiet. If you price out any PC case with a quality power supply and a fan that runs at 20dB. You'll probably pay about $150 for that case alone.
Looks are personal preference. I like the look of Macs.
It just works. There are only a few different Macs on the market and all are made by Apple. The OS is made by Apple. Again "it just works".
Troubleshooting... when it comes to resolving issues Mac people are anal about resolving them.
Software... iLife is excellent and it comes with every Mac.
3rd party devices... there are so many devices that are made specifically for Macs. I'm not aware of anything that is made specifically for a Dell. Other than a few monitors and printers that have been re-branded.
You can run OS X and Windows on a Mac.
I could go on.
The point is... these things matter to me and I get value out of them. None of this stuff may matter to you. It's up to you to decide. There is no definitive answer to your question. |

Seeing as the Pentium D doesn't perform as well as the Core Duo, the X300/X600 is really no better than the i950 and you are stuck with Windows XP there is pretty much no way to call that a better deal. _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

Apple claims that the Mac Pro is better value than if you configure the same specifications on the dell website. It is true to a certain extent.
Apple ship the Xeon "Woodcrest" as part of their professional fleet.
But if you configure Xeon on the Dell website, it is in the medium to enterprise category, workstation - precision models. There is a price difference but its not that great. |

Before and right after WWDC that price difference was pretty major... _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |
