I agree with you other comments about what the mini was originally designed for. If it weren't for the Mac mini's price and nice list of features, I would still be a PC User.

My mini's power connection is solid compared to the MagSafe. I've had the power connector fall out of my Macbook Pro half a dozen times and I've had it less than a month. I want what a lot of other people have alreay mentioned:
1. 3.5" hard drive (i.e., faster + lower cost + higher capacity)
2. Dedicated video (x1600?)
3. Fast external interface like FW800 or eSATA
I wouldn't mind if it was an inch or two taller to accomodate these goodies.
Apple's desktop-class offerings suck for those who want a nice external display like 23- or 30-inch Cinema. We're either stuck with a clumsy two-display iMac solution, an expensive laptop with mobility we don't need, or a 55-gallon tower. The mini is tolerable, but it could be so much better.
The PC world has a lot of small form factor (SFF) solutions that are in the middle (like the Shuttle X100). Mind you I don't want any of them, which is probably why Apple hasn't stepped up to the plate -- they know we'll keep buying whatever they put out. :-/ |

I'd call the mini a desktop computer that is made primarily/unnecessarily out of notebook components.
Apple was just trying to prove a point and shock the world when the mini debuted (and they did). Let's move on. Please... make a mini with desktop components or extend the product line with a non pro Mac. |

I really like the overall design of the Mac mini, but I always thought the power button should be up front. Here's a crude little Photoshop mockup I made of the power button up front. It would also be cool if the power button somehow doubled as the IR receiver eye for the remote. I'm not crazy about where the eye is now. The button would also be backlit in white.

Primarily? The only part that could be considered a true notebook component would be the hard drive. What other parts are you thinking about?

I guess, but the iMac uses a slot-loader too. As for the RAM, all the Intel Macs use the same sticks. It'll be interesting to see what they put in the Mac Pro though. The Core Duo chip could be considered another link to the notebook. Dell and HP seem to be using the Pentium D chip in most of their desktops. I think that would be reaching though.
Does anyone like my front power button?

I thought "bellybutton" 
I'd like to see something touch sensitive and very discrete. If a mechanical switch is needed the one one the back could remain.
I don't have to turn my machine off often. If I do it's to disconnect a cable so I'm at the back anyhow. I also have no issue reaching around to the back while sitting at my desk.
I'd personally like to see a power button on the keyboard. |
