Is it correct that the Intel iMac uses the same memory type as the Intel Mini and does it also require matched pairs?

I'd like to max out the memory eventually but in the interim I want to add a 512Mb module - does anyone know what brand the original Apple supplied module is and where it can be bought cheaply? Or is it possible to buy a 1Gb module (for 1.5Gb) and not take a performance hit?

The Intel iMac's, Mini's, and MBP's all use the same memory. If you mix modules, you will not be able to take advantage of the Mini's Dual-channel technology. So you WILL take a performance hit...Whether or not it will be noticable depends on your usage.

Thanks for confirming that but my question re. dual channel was in respect of the iMac not Mini.

I assume it is dual channel then? Unless a very cheap 512Mb SODIMM appears on eBay I might just try running 1.5Gb until I can put a further 1Gb stick in.

I need a KVM! I want to use my Logitech wireless combo with the iMac - any recommendations for a KVM?

Ok, how about this:

So wihch one is better, 1GB or 1.5 Gb.

I want to get my Imac with just a single 1GB stick so that later on I just add another 1GB.

Your choice the matched modules have about a 5% performance gain.

Intel Mini users report that they need at least 1GB of memory to get decent performance with the integrated graphics. The iMac has the ATI graphics with its own memory, so would I still get good performance with the stock 512MB, or to run the Mac OS well, should I really get the upgrade to 1GB?

My iMac was a "stealth upgrade" 1Gb so I can't compare to a 512Mb model but I assume that it would perform better than the 512Mb Mini. I intend to buy a MacBook and I'll put my 2x512Mb in that and upgrade this iMac to 2Gb eventually.

Apple's upgrade price for 1Gb is OK, higher is too expensive. The iMac does appear to run well with 1Gb onboard.

I had a intel mini with 1GB + 256MB. I was suffering from very poor OpenGL performance, and I read here that maybe the problem could be matched pairs... I went running to get another GB of ram, installed it, and same poor performance in OpenGL. In fact I dont feel no better performance in others areas or apps... So I think that "symmetric" thing is not really a bout real world performance...
