My Mac mini generation 2 concept includes 4 USB 2.0 ports, 2 FireWire ports, Audio-in and out. I dumped the modem to make room for the extra USB ports.

I'd stick the USB ports together on onet side of the video, and the firewire on the other. That would simplify the internal wiring. Maybe swap two of the USB and the ethernet?
You could also save some space by going to FW800 |

I was thinking of doing that. With the USB this way you can take cables around to the front from either side. Maybe I'll do one up the other way! _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

The back isn't really big enough for cable reach to be an issue, I don't think. If you're concerned about cables interfering, well, however you arrange them there's always going to be SOME crossing over. |

Point taken! I was trying to keep the DVI output centered and keep things in scale. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

with things that cramped it's going to be difficult to plug stuff in or pull stuff out without bashing other ports. it's already bad enough trying to hotplug firewire drives while everything is plugged in.
moving some ports to the front would alleviate that.
ergonomics over aesthetics any day. or do you really prefer apple's 'great aesthetics' hockey puck mouse? |

| Or if not all the way to the front, how about the front of the sides? |

The sides would be good! Up near one of the front corners. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)
