Bootcamp on external drive?

I bought a ministack external enclosure. I also bought a 250gb drive for it. My hope was to split that drive into two. Mac and Windows using a 50/50 split. It was also to be the boot disk and the 80gb internal in the mini was going to be for data storage.
It doesn't want to install bootcamp on the external drive. Bootcamp installer says it can't partition an external drive. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a workaround? If the Mac side boots from external, I don't see why the Windows side won't.

Have you tried installing OS X on the external, starting up from the external, then running the Boot Camp Installer? Boot Camp creates the Windows partition on the startup drive.

Thanks. Tried that. Bootcamp said no partitions allowed on external drive, and that was running the installer from either internal or external as the boot device.

Maybe get it installed on the internal, then get a bootable clone to the external?
