Apple Releases SuperDrive Firmware Update v2.0
Wednesday, May 31, 2006
Apple has released the SuperDrive Firmware Update v2.0 for PPC-based Mac minis with a SuperDrive. The update fixes burning speeds when writing to certain recordable DVD media. It requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, and is offered as a one-click installation. You should not reset, shut down, or turn off power to your computer while updating the firmware. Doing so may damage your SuperDrive. If you cannot update the firmware using this program, Apple suggests that you contact your local Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Store retail location.
[Update:] The SuperDrive Firmware Update v2.0 will only work with a PPC-based Mac mini that has either a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E or UJ-835F SuperDrive.

Hi, is this safe to perform? I updated the SMC firmware, and some software just stopped to function. I had to phone both Apple and Adobe, and the guy at Adobe mailed me a workaround because I could“nt reinstall the Adobe suite afer the upgrade. Do the guys at Apple really test out these upgrades against major softwares? ) Strata _________________ "I rather have a beer bottle in front of me, than a prefrontal lobothomy" |

| should i install this update for my ppc mini? whenever i go to the apple menu and choose "software update," it doesn't show up in the list of suggested updates. i should note, however, that my superdrive was installed after the fact and was not shipped with my machine. it is the panasonic dvr-k05 and not whatever stock model that you'd get if you ordered a superdrive at the time of purchase. should i update or not? thoughts? |

According to the site, my G4 Mini qualifies.
According to the installer, no applicable hardware was found.
I have a "Matshita DVD-R UJ-825" Super Drive. Maybe some models update and others don't?
I have a feeling we're going to hear more about this.

Yep. Mine is a UJ-845C and the update indicates no applicable hardware as well. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I got home from work and it turns out that I have the UJ-845C in my mini (BTO option) and Pioneer DVR-K04 in my iMac. Looks like a no go here. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Apple blew this one, in my estimation. A little extra information included on the download page would have saved time and frustration for a lot of people.
Of the people who successfully updated the firmware, has anyone noticed an improvement?

They were only able to burn at 2x with certain brands of blank DVDs. |
