Hitachi has released a 2.5" 7200rpm 100GB drive (Travelstar 7k100)
http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/05/11/100gb/index.php
I haven't actually seen any for sale yet but Dell is including them in some of their new notebooks.
I've considered the 60GB 7200RPM Travelstar but maybe I should wait just a little longer? |

You missed this? "The new drives are also slightly quieter." _________________ take care,

| I think its worth the wait. Its not like I'm really hurting performance-wise. Actually, I've been pleasantly surprised by the performance of my 1.42 mini. But the 7k100 certainly is tempting. It'll be interesting to see how its priced. |

Quieter than what? I'd like to read some third party reviews first. |

I popped a Travelstar 60g 7200 in my Mini. I have found the disk space to be quite adequate but of course your mileage may vary. Noise is only ever so slighty louder than the original 80g 4200 drive, certainly not enough to even be worried about, but the performance is much, much better. Highly recommended.

I'm beginning to think trading off some size for speed is a good idea. Where did you get your drive/price? |

Picked up mine at Fry's Electronics in Atlanta.. It was initially $170 but was able to get 10% knocked off of the price. This is not one of the E versions that is designed to run 24/7.. However, it has been running 24/7 for over a week and not a problem. It may die next week but I don't think so. I have used a number of Travelstar drives in other notebook systems and have never had a single problem with any of them. I thought I would miss the extra 20gigs from the original drive, but nope.. I still have 40+g left over after loading on everything I have Mac related plus 2,100 mp3 files. Very much worth the extra $$$ invested in the drive. I might could have done just a little cheaper thru an online dealer, but I'm an hour's drive to Atlanta, so the convenience factor to me was worth the few extra bucks.
To my knowledge, Fry's does not stock the E version. Fry's web site is www.outpost.com. Not sure if they sell these on their site or if it's just a store only item. Newegg used to sell these but I can't find it on their web site anymore. Either I can't find it or they don't sell them. Seems these drives are a wee bit hard to find, not sure why.
Regards,
Steve |

What did you do with the 80GB drive? _________________ -=iMav=-

Larry -- Just holding on to it. It's a slow and tedious drive. I'll likely just keep it tucked away in the safety box as a backup unit in case the Travelstar should stop working. Ya never know!

A while back, I got the courage up to open the Mini. I put the Travelstar 60g 7200 in my Mini too. It does make a significant difference in performance. I get an XBENCH benchmark of 132.2 that is up from about 116 with the factory drive installed. I'm only running 512 MB RAM in the Mini, it would be interesting to see if 1GB makes any difference. I suspect that it probably would not. Regardless, on many, but not all tasks, you can feel the difference with a 7200 RPM drive installed. _________________ Mac Pro Quad 2.66GHz, PowerMac G5 2.3 GHz, iMac Core Duo 17", MacBook Pro 2GHz, MacBook Pro 2.2GHz, Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz. | So has anyone found that 100gig drive for sale anywhere? Even with the price premium, it'd be nice to have theincrease in size as well as speed that I wouldn't get with the 60gig one. |

Okay, that's a tad out of my price range... I was all excited for these drives too. Thanks for the links, though. |
