Battery Powered Mac Mini
Wednesday May 18, 2005
Silas Bennett is powering his Mac mini with Li-ion Polymer batteries to run Debian Linux. The batteries are a new design from SKC PowerTech, Inc. Silas - "These Lithium-Ion Polymer cells are rated at 4.2V per cell maximum 3.6V average. Wait you haven't heard the best part, they are rated at 4Ah." To make room for the batteries and save power Silas removed both the hard drive and optical drive, and replaced them with a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive . A IDE to CF adapter is needed to hook the Microdrive up to the Mac mini's motherboard. Powering up the Mac mini required 18V of nominal voltage. Silas - "To get the 18V nominal voltage that the system needs I used 5 of the SKC PowerTech cells wired in series which gave me a 4Ah 20V battery." The Mac Mini was able to run for just over One Hour and 50 Minutes on the Li-ion Polymer batteries. Check out the full article for more technical information and pictures!

| This is a cool Mod but what's the point? I see none other than confirming the mini is very energy efficient. |

| I bet the 4GB Hitachi Microdrive is faster than the mini's. Apple please give the mini a faster drive in V2! |
