Should I get the 1.25 and upgrade the Hard Drive to 80gb and upgrade the Memory to 512mb. Total = $624
or
Get the 1.42 with the faster G4 and 80gb Hard Drive and upgrade the memory later. Total = $599
The first option seems like the smart move and better deal.
This would be my second Mac and I'm on a tight budget. Any Ideas?

| Get the 1.42GHz because you can always bump up the memory later. |

I still think the 1.25ghz is the better deal. I agree with Refluxx that most people believe the mhz myth and always will say get the fastest chip. I still think you have to weigh price to perfromance. While I appreciate the reply's above here is what I decided to do!
1.25Ghz standard setup up for $499 then added a Superdrive for $100. I'll add some more memory after I get it. Its going to be a long 3-4 weeks or longer to wait for my mini! |

Good luck with your order! Let me know what you think of your Mini when you get it. |

I ordered the 1.42 -- but I don't think there is a big diffence. I ordered the faster machine simply because of the hard drive.
I disagree about RAM, though -- I would recommend ordering at least 512. Whether you get the faster chip or not, you'll be happy you had more RAM. Yes, you can upgrade later -- but I wouldn't want to have my first experiences with the mini be with an under RAMed machine. Especially when you start playing around with iMovie, iDVD and Garageband! _________________ Mini arrived 2-11-05. Apple customer since 1982. |

I agree get the 1.42. Sure you could upgrade the 1.25 BTO up to 80GB but then for just a few bucks more you could of had the faster G4 chip. What ever model you pick get 512mb ram! |

I would personally get the 1.25 mini.
1. The 1.25's HD is 5400 rpm, faster than the 80 gig in the 1.42
2. Use the money you saved for 1GB of ram. The more ram the better.
3. When 40GB gets to be too low, grab a huge 200+ GB 7200rpm 3.5" HD and stick it into a FireWire enclosure. Hook that up to the mini and you'll be smoking. |

I choosed the 1.42Ghz one because of the hard drive. I'm not sure the extra speed is clearly visible. As already said, for speed you better get 512Mb minimum of ram or go for the 1Gb.
I've got an external USB drive too but I just want to store a bit more on the Mini itself so that I can do without the external HD most of the time see. And mainly because I share the external HD with my laptop PC _________________ Mac Mini 1.58Ghz 1Gb & Sharp Laptop PC

| I ordered the 1.25Ghz it seemed like the better deal. 1.42 GHZ is not going to be that much faster. |
