I'm not sure about soldering 256MB on the board. Why doesn't Apple just give us what we really want, two slots with one open and 512MB standard.

I imagine it takes significantly more space on the motherboard to provide an extra slot than to solder the RAM directly on. Soldered RAM could be almost flush with the logic board, I think, whereas there's really no room left for another standing component. They currently have 256 MB fixed in place in the iBooks, and they've done it in the past (my old PowerMac 5400 had 8 MB soldered; space wasn't an issue there so they also had two slots). Of course, this is all just speculation, wishful thinking, and arm chair engineering. Very Happy

Slots generally conserve space. Consider that components take significant 2d board space, a slot is nearly 1d. Slot are mounted vertical, so you save the horizontal space the chips would normally take on the board -- often this is significant amounts of space.

Would be pretty dumb for apple to solder memory on the mini instead of providing dimm slots.

Been there done that!

I agree with Bani...

I've been wondering, is there anyway Apple could slice 1/2 to 1 inch off the mini's height without dumping the optical drive?

What if Apple comes out with a single processor G5 tower for $999. Would you still buy a mini V2?

No way the G5 is going in the Mac mini before the Powerbook. The mini will be lucky to get audio-in and better video card in the next update!

I'm glad it won't come out until next spring. I'd like to get a new mini before I get a new game console. Very Happy

Are you thinking of a G5 in the current silver case, so maybe a cheaper version of the 1.8Ghz model there currently? Or a "big mini" with a G5?
