Hi all.

Just looking for a little clarification.

Just got my new Mini Due 1.66 - 2GB Ram and for a little present (upgraded from a G4 667) I picked up Sims 2. I thought it would run smoothly without problems after reading the posts here but when I run it I get this message:

"The Sims 2 recommends a PowerPC processor running at 500MHz or faster.

Your computer does not meet the recommended speed requirement. Game play will suffer as a result and Aspyr Technical Support will not be able to assist you in this matter."

I double checked the requirements and as I see it it should run just fine.

I then can click "ok" and continue. Then the game loads up and I can play. But the play is a bit pokey. Is there something I can (or should) alter the settings of on my computer? It's only 2 days old and I haven't monkeyed around with it yet really. The game is using all the lowest settings already. I'd really like to speed it up a bit if at all possible and I'd like to get rid of that message if I can.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Newbie to the Mini Smile

Andy

Well, the game says you need a PowerPC, like your old Mac. The new Mini's have the Intel chip, so that's why there's the error. As far as I know, a universal binary version might need to be made(?)

Ah okay. Thanks for the reply. It seems to work half way decently. It slows down from time to time and I don't have any big houses yet so I'm a little worried about once the game gets detailed.

I'm thinking I'll contact ASPYR and see if they have any thoughts but won't keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks again!

im running a few PowerPC games on my Core Solo Mini and i have noticed problems (errors, slow downs, crashes) with playing them as well.

but i think when or if they make Universal updates for them they will play no problem and im sure with a popular game like the sims they're bound to update to universal binary.

i think possibly the Mini has extra problem with non universal games because it has a Intel graphics processor as well. but im not sure if that would make a difference.

I see. So a patch may be able to fix this problem? If so then it's probably just a matter of time. I'll email Aspyr anyhow and see what they have to say about the problem.

Thanks guys!

For anyone encountering the same error. Here is the official response from ASPYR. April 7, 2006.

"You can ignore that error message entirely.

While the Sims 2 may play on the Intel Mac, the stability is not guaranteed--however, we are currently working on a patch that will improve compatibility with the Intel processors. Keep checking our website, aspyr.com, for details on this.

Note however, even after this patch comes about, there may still be issues with the integrated video card the Intel Mini uses. This is not something we can guarantee we'll have a fix for, but the patch may still assist in resolving any problems you have."

So there you have it. A patch is in the works. Fairly quick response from ASPYR as well. Nice.

Really? I don't see it on the Aspyr website. Can you post the link to where you found the patch?

Thanks!
