Apple announces Boot Camp
Wednesday April 5, 2006
Apple today introduced Boot Camp, a new public beta that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. According to the company, "Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows. Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them." The final version of Boot Camp will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard. Boy, we can't wait to see Leopard at WWDC!

We are definitely living in a new world. I betcha Michael Dell has a lump in his throat this morning. I really like the part on the Boot Camp page that says "Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it'll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes."

I had a hunch something was coming after Apple released 10.4.6 on Monday, but this is insanely great news.

Gotta love the grayscale "Windows logo".
It's like Apple are saying "sure, you can run that old OS if you want to".

| This is indeed great news. I was otherwise going to have to dedicate the weekend to tweeking the system with Narf's solution, but with this, I bet a few hours will do. |

| Wow. This is the start of a tectonic shift in the computer industry. However, I don't know about you guys, but as a home user, I don't have much need/interest in being able to boot Windows Xp. I'm not anti-MS or anything, I just want to keep things simple on my machine and stick to Mac OS. I was a bit reluctant to switch, but I decided to take the plunge. I figured I could switch back with my next computer if need be. Now that I've been running Mac OS, I love it and don't see any great need (currently) for Windows. I think some of the nebulous crowd of people who apparently like Apple but are reluctant to switch (constantly referrred to in news articles) would be pleasantly surprised to find that things work out just fine if they took the plunge like I did. |

I have a new core solo sitting on my desk at work.... XP is installing as I type this...

OK,
So... I am now posting this in XP, using Firefox on my mini core solo. And it runs VERY well. Apple has done a REALLY good job with the boot camp software. To use that imfamous mac quote at this point "IT JUST WORKS!!". This machine could really use some more ram.. I think XP feels more responsive than Tiger, but it does feel like using XP on a newer Dell with only 512MB of RAM. So it really does "feel" like you are using XP on a generic PC.
After getting this to work, I already asked my wife if I could buy a new mini!!! So I guess I may have a PPC mini for sale VERY soon...
Just wanted to share my experience so far....

I hate to repeat myself, but what resolution are you running at on the Windows side? Will it support 1680x1050 and 1920x1200? |
