I'd suggest that you wait for a few months until Apple releases their Intel version of the Mac mini... |
I'll respectfully disagree with that. Get the computer you need and can afford when you need it and can afford it, and don't worry about which way the wind might blow in three months' time.
There are a lot of people who didn't buy a Mini in November/December thinking they'd be updated at MWSF, and all those people would have been enjoying their Minis for at least several months, and probably much longer, if they had bought then.
If you constantly wait for the latest and greatest, you'll never buy anything.

How did you turn off the fan? I was thinking of doing this with my Western Digital 7200 drive installed. Would this be a problem, given that the miniStack has a huge heat sink and some of the competing HD external enclosures like the LaCie don't have a fan.

Just order one of these. Good use for one of my now unused 7200 WD HD from my old XP boxes.

Well, I figured that a 2.5", 4200RPM laptop drive wouldn't be able to heat up all that extra space (which is made for a 3.5" drive), so I simply disconnected the fan itself from the pcboard. 
That said, I left everything connected on my miniStack v2, since I've put an old 40GB, 3.5", 7200RPM drive in it.
Also, other companies may use the case itself as a heatsink, which the miniStack can't do since it's made of plastic (heatsink aside, of course).

| I'd like to put a SATA (instead of ATA/IDE) hard drive inside the miniStack. Will there be a miniStack which uses SATA hard drives, or is there a simple SATA to IDE gender adapter allowing this to happen? |

There have few if any FireWire enclosures for SATA drives to date--not sure if there's a technical reason or if it's just a market-based decision. Given the paucity of choices, I'd guess it's the former.
