Intel Mac mini Upgraded to 2.16GHz Core Duo
Sunday March 5, 2006
Posted by: Paul Stamatiou
The great modder that goes by the name Fugger at XtremeSystems has proved that it is possible to swap the CPU in the new Intel Mac Minis. He was able to successfully upgrade his 1.5GHz Core Solo based Mac Mini with a Intel Yonah 2.16GHz Core Duo. The Core Solo model is the cheaper of the two Mac Mini configurations available by Apple. This is great news for people that want the ability to buy something cheap now and have the ability of upgrading to a much faster processor, as per my earlier prediction. This was made possible by the discovery that the motherboards in both new Mac Minis are identical Intel Napa-based boards.
The XtremeSystems thread is very impressive, showing the steps necessary to complete such an upgrade yourself. The CPU swap involves removing the motherboard completely, taking off the heatsink and the old CPU. The process is definitely not for the faint of heart when it comes to dismantling a new Mac Mini.

| This is cool, but how much do the faster chips cost? |

I _JUST_ ordered a 1.5GHz Core Solo stock only with BTO Superdrive option. I'm about to put in an order for 2GB from OWC and then a Core Duo 1.83GHz that runs for $289 on Newegg (or around there). Also picking up a 7200rpm, 80GB SATA drive from newegg. Hopefully around spring break (2ish weeks) everything will have arrived at my house and I'll post a nice how to with possibly a video. =D _________________ Computational Media UGrad @ Georgia Tech

Newegg has the 2.0GHz for around $425. I don't see this as being a realistic upgrade for most people out there, but it's good to know that you'll have some options down the road. Hopefully prices will start to come down on the Core Duos over the next few months. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

The 2.16 that Fugger used is only sold to certain stores, ie you have to have connections, and it retails for 650+. =/ I figured the 1.83 was a good compromise between price and faster than stock speeds. _________________ Computational Media UGrad @ Georgia Tech

Just some food for thought, but why not just use the core solo model for awhile and wait for the prices of the 2.x+ core duo chips to drop? Might make a great upgrade in a year or so.... _________________ Vote for me, and your wildest dreams will come true.. - Pedro Sanchez, "Napoleon Dynamite" |

Totally agree. That was sort of the point I was trying to make. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Or wait for something faster than the 2.16 to be released. _________________ Computational Media UGrad @ Georgia Tech

| This is great news. The new mini's should prove to be very entertaining. It's nice to have great out of the box options, along with the ability to satisfy modders. |

| I'd wait a while because someone might find a way to overclock the new minis. |

INCREDIBLE! But I hope, they won't forget the G4 MacMini's, Only overclocking these is even more difficult to do. _________________ ___________________Jim©

Maybe we'll see some water cooled minis down the road.
I mean heat has to become an issue sooner or later. I wonder how high of a clock speed Apple plans to take these minis to? The heatsink looks larger in the pictures, but will that be enough? _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Would this mean that when Apple upgrades the mini in half a year or more, that they potentially may bump up the proscesor speed rather than just add extra ram or something?
And how long would it take for a 2.16GHz chip to be around $200? half a year? |
