ATI Displays 4.5 Adds New Mac Mini Support

ATI has updated their Displays control app and added support for the Mac Mini. Displays 4.5 adds a new Advanced Display Scaling feature, Enabled Browse functionality in OpenGL Overrides and VERSAVISION is now enabled on the Mac mini. VERSAVISION allows you to view your desktop the way you want, providing hardware accelerated display rotation and scaling. Release notes for ATI Displays 4.5 are available from the ATI website. A direct download for ATI Displays 4.5 is also available from ATI. Note: Advanced Display Scaling and VersaVision features are not enabled until you restart your system after initially installing the ATI Displays Control Panel.

[Update:] There's a bit of confusion coming out of ATI with the release of Displays 4.5. It looks like Displays 4.5 does not have VersaVision support for the Mac mini. The update does include Mac2TV and OpenGL Overrides. The release notes on the ATI website still say under the “What’s New Section” that VERSAVISION is now enabled on Mac mini as of 2:29 PM EST.

So....what exactly does that mean for my mini? What does this enable for me that wasn't there before?

VERSAVISION "display rotation" is probably the best new feature. You're not going to see any giant performance gains if that's what you mean.

Hi Blazer,
This got me to look at the system profiler in my Mac mini I noticed in my old Apple monitor a setting for mirror. Which says mirror off a funtion of the Mac mini Hardware. I have all the controls in the Monitor for every aspect of the monitor.
There is only one video output so what does this mean?

I have a mini running 10.3.9 and a Dell 2005FP 20" widescreen (that supports rotation) connected by DVI, but how do I use VERSAVISION? Downloaded, restarted, and i don't see any option for it nor does it just happen when i twist the display.
any idea? |

I have got so used to not reading manuals I decided to break the rule and read about the mirroring switch, but I am still puzzled of the intent as if there was the opportunity to connect the two monitors and somehow see them naturally mirroring from the one adaptor output. I thought that such a signal would be two weak to support two monitors? Or is it TV output and Monitor? Any ideas? With my IBook the setting is main screen mirroring for the mini output as a default.
I asked our tech about that very question of two monitors and he was negative about the idea. Where there is a will there is a way. My thought was Monitor and projector as a normal PC has outputs, so what is the way? Questions!

Try VGA because some Dell monitors won't work in Portrait mode using DVI.

It seems to me that little ? help button: the ATI displays help gives many leads and the reference to the web site is worth a long read.

| We have followed the instructions provided by ATI, but we are not able to see the Advanced pane on the ATI Displays application window. And there seems to be some contradicting stuff in the documentation. |

ATI always craps on the Mac. I'd like to see the next mini come with something from NVIDIA. I thought I'd never say this but the GeForce FX 5200 ain't looking bad.

| I am having trouble getting mac2tv to work. When I enable it it stays on off and all of the control and ratio/size options are greyed out. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Am I able to use these options using DVI? |

I think this update is a waste of time! I hope ATI gets "VERSAVISION" display rotation working. |

They should clear up the documentation, but this isn't entirely ATI's fault.
Apple has an OEM branded 9200 card in the mini, meaning features are disabled, and the card is offered to Apple at a cheaper price. Unless Apple ponies up the bucks to purchase them, you won't have access to those panels.
This is also why the 124 firmware update is not available to the mini. |
