I`m curious has anybody tried the new Mac Mini 2009 with new games ...
I`m not hard core gamer ... but soon .. several very interesting and log waited games will be released .. such as DIABLO 3 or ... Baldur`s gate 3 ...
So I`m worried ... there is a possibility .. to load off 800$ ... and not to be able to play my favorite games Smile and it will be a trouble!

My display is HP 20` 1600x1200.

SO please If anyone has tried the new Mini with modern games at high resolution .. share some experience Smile

A quote for a PCWorld article :

Code:
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/161139/mac_mini_2009_edition.html

Quote:
It's in the graphics department that the new models really shine--at least compared to older Mac minis. Thanks to the GeForce 9400M GPU, the new $799 mini's performance (measured in frames per second) was seven times that of its predecessor in our Quake 4 test, 39.1 versus 5.6. Similarly, in our Unreal Tournament 2004 test, the new mini's framerate (63.0) was nearly three times that of its predecessor's (21.9). Perhaps most telling, the new mini was able to generate 35.6 frames per second in Call of Duty 4; the previous mini couldn't even run the game. (When equipped with comparable RAM [2GB] the $599 mini produced similar results; with the stock 1GB RAM, performance was reduced by roughly 17 percent in the same tests.)

Pop in 4GB ram and you should be good to go , dunno how demanding Diablo3 will be though . I say just buy an xbox 360 like most Real gamers. Wink

lol buy a PC. For $800 you can build a nicely tricked out PC that can run anything out today and tomorrow. Or build a hackintosh for 1/3 of the price of a mac....
You wont be able to run jack nice with a laptop video card. Also most games DO NOT SUPPORT laptop video cards, so be ready for possible problems.

I'm running a new Mini with 2 gigs of RAM and the larger HD. Call of Duty 4, Return to Wolfenstein, Doom 3 all run great. Civilization IV is smooth as well.

I'm running a 1920 x 1200 monitor and I'm disappointed with any newer games. Quake 4, Prey, CoD2 and WoW don't play well at all until you turn the resolution down to about 1280 x 800. As for older games, Jedi Knight II, Warcraft III and UT2004 seem fine at the high resolution. Tomb Raider: Anniversary Editon is borderline at 1920 x 1200, the rendered cut scenes are jumping frames, but gameplay so far seems mostly smooth.

BTW, I have a 2.26GHz system with 4GB of memory / 256MB detected VRAM.

I agree you can't run the higher resolutions well, but if you can live with 1280 X 800, the framerate is ok.

If gameplay your most important item, you should probably look at an iMac with the optional graphics card, or as someone else pointed out, get a PC for your games, and use the Mini for your other stuff.

I used to use my beefed up pc for games, but got my mini for design, and use the 360 for games. For £120 you will be running games as they were meant to be run, or you could spend £300 on a top end graphics card and you still have no garauntee of it running everything properly.

Seems like an easy choice to me. Get a mini and a 360!

I always find it interesting when a new mini comes out. First it is looked at as awesome. A few weeks later it already begins to show it's limitations in the gaming department.

Anyhow, this thread is great. It's good to get real world results, so people can be realistic about their expectations.

I have tried:

COD4 (for Mac) - it runs OK but you can't play it in higher resolutions, but it's totally playable and runs pretty smooth.

Fallout 3 (bootcamp, Windows XP) - It is playable in low settings. Could probably get it to look and run better if you play around a little with the settings. But it is at least playable.

Guitar Hero III (for Mac) - Totally playable.

Unreal Tournament 2004 (for Mac) - Runs perfectly in 1680x1050

I have now "played around" a little with the settings for Fallout 3 (Boot Camp, XP) and now it runs much better.

I had to manually edit the .ini-files and also change the resolution to 1152, but now it looks pretty nice and it's playable. I haven't played it very much so I don't know if there is any areas that are extremly demanding on the hardware.

Very Happy
