Mac mini SE/30 Mod
Wednesday February 1, 2006
What do you get when you mix an old classic Mac with the Mac mini? You get the Mac mini SE/30 mod. We had a hard time translating some of the information, but it looks like the Mac mini and power adapter are sitting in the bottom of the SE/30 where the motherboard and floppy drive were installed. The back of the SE/30 has been modded to include a custom-made power button and USB ports for the Mac mini. They also cut a hole in the back of the SE/30 for the Mac mini's power cable to pass through.
The Mac mini is connected to the SE/30's black and white screen with VGA for video. What about the optical drive? They were able to cut open one of the SE/30's front vents to access the drive. It's pretty cool seeing a Tiger DVD coming out of the front. Make sure you check out the rest of the pictures!

| That is cool. I like it. He/she did a nice clean job. I'd like to see it done with an LCD insert. |

An LCD touchscreen would be cool. This is still one of the better, if not best mini mods. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Finally a Mac case mod that makes sense. An old Mac turned into a new Mac!
Isn't there similar old Macs with color screens, though? |

i have an extra mac mini and a disasembled color classic sitting in front of me. does anyone know if there are more details on the vga video modification? it looks as if they are running a vga cable into the se 30 display somehow.
the color classic uses and analogue board with a ribbon cable connector and im not sure how to make the stock display with the mini. it is capable of 640x480 vga.
thanks.. |

The first mod I've seen that actually made me jealous.

I wonder if the board is from another computer or display? Could there be an adapter? This mod is pretty cool, but I still think they make better aquariums. |

| Cool mod, but who wants to look at a black and white screen all day? |

From Mac 512Ks to Pluses to Classics to a Powerbook 520, I didn't use a color screen on a computer until the mid-'90s.
It's amazing how satisfactory selective ignorance can be, although it would be hard going back to b/w now.

I really like it. It is some kind of cool. It is the first mod that I have seen that would seem worthy of the cause-just cause. _________________ 1.42 GHz Mac Mini/ 1GBCrucial RAM/WiFi BT

| I'd buy a MAC Colour Classic III (with a 12" LCD? screen and a mini inside) in a heart beat. You'd think that Apple'd get wise and offer such a thing for the nostalgic market. Shouldn't be a huge leap in engineering difficulty given how small the Mini is already. |

They've added english detail to the article, they didn't use the stock display at all they changed it out for a greyscale CCTV monitor
| Quote: | We did not use original monitor and analog board because it can only display black and white.
We used 9 inch Gray Scale cathode-ray tube moniter made by the TVS company. |
