I don't know if I mentioned in another post but my sister needed a computer and didn't want to wait or do a bunch of running around. She liked my mini and I sold it to her and gave her the keyboard and mouse for one price. I did this in anticipation of new announcements coming due. So now I am again without a Mac trying to decide what to do. My question is. When Leopard comes out will it have all of it's capabilities on the Mini even if the Mini doesn't get a C2D upgrade? I really want to go out maybe today and get another machine as long as when Leopard comes out I can use it to it's full potential. I really look forward to your answers and will most likely make my decision to buy now or wait for Leopard to come out based on what you guys say.

Thank you

I think you mean Leopard. Panther was before Mac OS X Tiger. The Intel Core Duo mini's should be fine to run leopard, but some applications like Core Animation might not run as smooth as the C2D machines. If you can wait it out, I would wait for iLife 07', Leopard, and a new mini with a C2D.

Since Leopard is based on a 64-bit platform, the 32-bit Core Duo machines won't have the best performance. You will get the best performance if you wait for a 64-bit processor(Core 2 Duo).

Then that would mean it would be a certainty they would have to make the bump up when the new OS is out. It would not make any sense to be selling a computer that is to antiquated to even make full use of their own OS.

Correct. But remember the mac mini is apples budget machine, and it is the cheapest Apple computer out.

That still shoulden't make the mac mini users whimp out on getting the full features of 10.5.

If you can stand being without a Mac for a while, hold out and wait for Leopard. At the very least, you'll save yourself the cost of the upgrade to Leopard (as it will be bundled with you new mini). At the most, your wait will pay off in a bump to C2D minis.

Do keep in mind that any talk about a C2D Mini is purely speculation at this point. It's entirely possible Apple will keep it a Core Duo or go some other route with it.

However, with the successes people have had swapping in a C2D, the pricing of C2Ds, and the rest of the Apple lineup being C2Ds or better, it's the most likely course of action.

What with the seemingly impending release of Leopard has Apple released a minimum spec yet? Surely they would have this sort of information by now?

You could always see how the Core Duo mini runs Leopard. And if it's not up to your expectations, you could always drop in a C2D.

A 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo is priced around $300.

Wikipedia is a wonderful resource for this sort of stuff. Smile Here's what their page on OS X 10.5 says:

Quote:
Compatibility

Like Mac OS X 10.4, Leopard will be available for both PowerPC and Intel Macs.[27] While it is known that Leopard will support PowerPC G4 and PowerPC G5 processors, it is unknown whether Leopard will support the PowerPC G3 processor. Support for the G3 is reportedly not present in the pre-release versions available to developers[citation needed]. When Apple's Leopard website first appeared online, the 64-bit section stated, "From G3 to Xeon, from MacBook to Xserve, there is just one Leopard." The sentence was removed from the page the following day, leaving open the question of whether Leopard will support Macs with G3 processors.[28] In the past, each new major release of Mac OS X has dropped support for at least some older Macs; 10.3 dropped support for Macs without built-in USB ports, and 10.4 dropped support for computers without FireWire ports.

Documentation contained with the Developer Preview DVD states that a PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel processor is a minimum requirement. Despite this, some users have managed to install the developer preview version of Leopard on Macs with G3 processors by editing a particular file and then creating a new installation DVD with this edited file. However, even though these installations of Leopard can be installed on G3 Macs, some applications (for example Safari and iChat) will not run.[29] It is not known whether this will be possible with the final shipping version of Leopard.

In any case, it sounds like they will be supporting a fairly wide range of Macs with Leopard.
